Job description

We are looking for a PhD candidate to develop a comprehensive approach to assess the potential of various novel protein technologies in mitigating food insecurity. The focus will be on proteins from cellular agriculture and single‑cell proteins derived from waste streams. Work will involve field research in a European region and an East‑African region, identifying regional causes of food insecurity, designing inclusive value chains, and providing policy recommendations.

Responsibilities
  • Combine qualitative and quantitative data into a comprehensive analytic approach, applying mixed methods techniques.
  • Travel to two different regions, conduct local fieldwork, and manage field logistics.
  • Develop conceptual designs for inclusive novel protein value chains, considering technology processes and local resources.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Industrial Ecology, Innovation Science, Sustainability Science, or a related discipline.
  • Preferably a combined background in food technology or biotechnology with a discipline such as Industrial Ecology or Sustainability Science.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Research experience and writing skills demonstrated through a thesis, publications, or previous research projects.
  • Fluent in English.
Conditions of employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a four‑year period of employment in principle, structured as two contracts: an initial 1.5‑year contract with a progress assessment after 15 months, followed by a second contract for the remaining 2.5 years if performance requirements are met.

Salary and benefits

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month from the first to the fourth year (full‑time contract of 38 hours). Benefits include 8 % holiday allowance, an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %, a monthly work‑costs contribution, and the possibility of further discounts on health insurance. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
