Position: PhD Position (Experimental) Air-Knife Turbulent Jet Impingement on a Liquid Zinc Surface

PhD Position (Experimental) Air-Knife Turbulent Jet Impingement on a Liquid Zinc Surface

Provide fundamental insights into an air turbulent jet impinging on a liquid surface using state‑of‑the‑art experimental techniques. This 4‑year PhD position is in the research group of Prof. Dr. Sasa Kenjeres at the Department of Chemical Engineering, TU Delft, The Netherlands.

The project focuses on the experimental study of the interaction between a high‑velocity gas jet and liquid zinc during hot‑dip galvanizing, a process critical to steel corrosion protection. You will design, build and operate experimental setups and perform advanced PIV‑based multi‑phase flow measurements. The work is part of the Holland High‑Tech program and involves close collaboration with industrial partners (M 2i, Tata Steel).

Job Requirements
  • An MSc in a relevant field such as Applied Physics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience with experimental techniques, including PIV.
  • A keen interest in interdisciplinary, curiosity‑driven, and applied research.
  • Fluency in English and a preference for working in an international research environment.
  • Team‑working mentality and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Conditions of Employment

Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4‑year period of employment, typically split into a 1.5‑year initial contract with a progress assessment after 15 months, followed by a 2.5‑year contract contingent on performance.

Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, ranging from €3 059 to €3 881 gross per month from year 1 to year 4 (full‑time, 38 hours). Additional benefits include 8 % holiday allowance, an end‑of‑year bonus of 8.3 %, health‑insurance discounts, a monthly work‑costs contribution, and possible flexible work schedules.

Application Procedure

Please submit your application no later than 2 August 2026 via the application button and include:
