Job Description & How to Apply Below

Overview

Within the Quantum Technology department we are developing quantum computation, quantum sensing, and quantum communication. This internship focuses on building demonstrators for spin‑qubit computation devices. The team is composed of specialists in design, fabrication, modelling, and measurement of spin‑qubit systems, and the internship emphasizes both modelling and measurement with a focus on readout of the qubits.

Role

As a project intern you will perform simulations and measurements on spin‑qubit devices. Your primary focus will be on the concept of correlated double sensing (CDS), a technique for reducing 1/f noise in measurements. You will develop a noise model, propose compensation techniques, and validate the model through experimental measurements on spin‑qubit systems. Key learning outcomes include:

  • The concept of CDS and spin‑qubit measurements
  • Developing models and simulations for the noise in Python
  • Performing measurements on a spin‑qubit device
  • Reporting your work in a presentation or paper
Qualifications
  • Master student in physics, computer science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of quantum mechanics or quantum simulations
  • Experience in programming, preferably Python
  • Capability to work independently and communicate with multiple team members
  • Availability for an internship lasting 4 to 9 months
Internship Details and Benefits

Working at TNO offers a professional environment where research and practice converge. You will gain experience that extends beyond a typical internship, helping you determine whether TNO could be a next step after graduation. Benefits include:

  • A professional and innovative internship environment that tackles societal and technological challenges alongside leading experts
  • Personal and dedicated supervision focused on your learning objectives, development, and study assignment
  • Access to necessary equipment and facilities, including a laptop
  • A monthly internship allowance of €615 for full‑time internships (MSc, BSc, and MBO students)
  • Up to eight hours of leave per internship month to balance studies and personal life
  • Contribution toward travel expenses if not entitled to a student travel card
  • Free membership to Jong TNO, a network for young colleagues, providing professional and personal development activities and social events
