Senior Data Engineer

We are currently searching for a Senior Data Engineer to join our leading clients team. This project is exciting and fast paced, and requires expert level knowledge of all the tools detailed below.

Please note this role is offered as a 12-month extendable contract. You must also be available in a maximum of 30 days. The role is to be worked fully remotely.

We are seeking a highly skilled  Senior Data Engineer  with  7+ years of hands-on experience  in designing, implementing, and supporting modern data warehousing and business intelligence solutions. This role requires end-to-end ownership of data architecture, engineering, and governance, with a strong focus on Azure cloud technologies. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, lead BI data architecture initiatives, and help shape best-in-class data practices across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
Data Architecture & Engineering
Own the  end-to-end BI data architecture , ensuring scalability, performance, governance, and alignment with business needs.
Design, develop, and maintain  data warehousing solutions , covering ingestion, data modelling, ETL/ELT processes, and downstream consumption layers for BI teams.
Architect and implement  robust data pipelines  using Azure cloud services to support new BI development and optimise existing workflows.
Define and enforce  industry-standard data engineering best practices  across architecture, development, testing, deployment, and documentation.

ETL/ELT Development
Build, enhance, and optimise  ETL/ELT pipelines  using Azure technologies (such as Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, Azure Synapse, Azure SQL, Data Lake, etc.).
Ensure data pipelines are reliable, scalable, cost‑effective, and capable of delivering high‑quality data for analytics and reporting.
Troubleshoot and improve the performance of existing data integrations and workflows.

Cloud Migration & Modernisation
Analyse, strategize, and execute the  migration of on‑premises data pipelines to Azure cloud services .
Evaluate current infrastructure and propose modernisation approaches to improve performance and reduce operational overhead.

Governance & Best Practices
Establish and maintain  data governance standards , including data quality, lineage, security, and compliance practices.
Act as the  BI Data Architect , guiding project teams on architectural decisions and ensuring alignment with enterprise standards.

Strategic Input & Stakeholder Collaboration
Work closely with leadership and BI teams to provide  strategic recommendations  on cost optimisation, infrastructure utilisation, and future‑proof architecture.
Lead technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and support cross-functional project initiatives.

Required Skills & Experience
7+ years  of hands-on experience in data engineering and data warehousing.
Strong expertise in  Azure data services  (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse Analytics, Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL).
Proven experience in  designing and implementing data warehouses , including dimensional modelling, architecture layers, and ETL frameworks.
Deep understanding of  data governance, metadata management, and best practices  for BI architectures.
Strong proficiency in SQL, ETL/ELT development, and performance optimisation.
Experience migrating  on-premises data pipelines to cloud (Azure) .
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
