This role is open globally, but preferred locations are set in India, Poland or Finland. The work model is hybrid #LI-hybrid.
The Business Area IS Architect leads the definition, development, and governance of the Information Systems (IS) architecture for the Motion Business. This role establishes the framework for how architecture is defined , governed and will evolve across the Business Area to ensure alignment with ABB Group Enterprise Architecture principles and standards.
The architect provides strategic direction and leadership for both architecture and innovation, ensuring that the Business Area's IS landscape remains coherent, interoperable, and future-ready. Working in close collaboration with business, IS, and functional leaders, the role ensures that Motion's digital and technology strategies are fully supported by an integrated and forward-looking IS architecture.
Rather than dictating content, the role drives the architecture and innovation process , enabling stakeholders across the organization to co-develop architectures, roadmaps, and standards that collectively define the Motion Target IS Architecture and Innovation Portfolio.
Purpose and mission
Lead the development and maintenance of the Business Area Target IS Architecture aligned with ABB Group enterprise standards.
Manage the Business Area IS Innovation Portfolio, identifying and prioritizing emerging technologies that deliver business value.
Ensure that architecture governance and innovation processes are integrated to support long-term business transformation.
Enable architectural coherence across the Business Area through clear processes, governance, and engagement models.
Connect strategy to execution, ensuring IS architectures reflect both ABB Group standards and divisional realities.
Drive collaboration between business, IS, and functional leaders to co-create architectures that support the BA's and Division target operating models and future-state vision.
Ensure transparency and traceability from business objectives to IS solutions and technology investments.
Key responsibilities
1. Architecture Strategy, Process & Governance
Design, implement, and continuously refine the BA-level architecture governance model , ensuring alignment with Group IS architecture frameworks.
Lead the definition, communication, and implementation of the Business Area Target IS Architecture , ensuring alignment with Group Enterprise Architecture.
Facilitate architecture boards, review cycles, and decision forums, ensuring active participation from divisional, business, and IS stakeholders.
Define and maintain architecture principles, standards, and lifecycle processes , harmonized with Group-level direction.
Ensure architecture reviews, compliance assessments, and roadmap updates are embedded in project and investment governance.
Provide transparency on progress against the architecture roadmap and facilitate informed decision-making at leadership level.
2. Innovation and Technology Management
Le ad the identification and evaluation of emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to Motion's business and operations.
Manage the Motion IS Innovation Portfolio , balancing transformative and sustaining technology initiatives.
Promote cross-divisional collaboration in innovation pilots and modernization programs.
Partner with Group Innovation a nd Technology teams to align Motion's innovation efforts with ABB-wide priorities.
3. Architecture Development and Integration
Develops and maintains architectures for domains and services managed at the Business Area level , such as shared platforms, common data and integration services, and cross-divisional capabilities , ensuring these architectures are reusable and form the foundation for divisional and functional designs.
Supports the development of end-to-end architectures by division , ensuring they align with the BA's target IS operating model and ABB's enterprise architecture standards.
Support divisions in translating their business strategies into target state IS landscapes and roadmaps.
Ensure that data, application, and technology architectures are consistent , interoperable, and strategically aligned.
Identify dependencies and synergies across divisional architectures to allow reuse and efficiency where desired by the divisions.
4. Stakeholder Engagement and Facilitation
Represent the Business Area in Group-level architecture forums, strategy reviews, and enterprise governance boards.
Act as a bridge between business strategy and technology execution, engaging leaders across functions, divisions, and IS domains.
