About Us

Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job. Provincial Outfits is located in Miller Lake; the central hub of the Department of Public Works. Here at Provincial Outfits, there’s no worry about doing the same thing day in, day out. As is the nature of construction, things are always changing, no two days are alike, and every job is different.

We are responsible for supporting Nova Scotia’s 23,000-kilometer road network and 4,100 bridges. If you’re looking for a dynamic, flexible opportunity where you can watch your hands‑on experiences come to life, we want to hear from you.

Primary Accountabilities

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Provincial Outfits, the Centreline Operator‑Painter performs any one or a combination of duties as assigned in the process of painting highway road lines in the Province of Nova Scotia, including but not limited to: setting up, maintaining and cleaning equipment; operating paint pump/compressor for loading material; operating painting equipment (including paint trucks) for the process of painting highway road surfaces;

inspecting work completed for quality and conformance to standards; and assisting with the maintenance and repairs of the trucks.

Qualifications and Experience

Grade 12 completion and one (1) year of construction experience and training; or an acceptable equivalence of education and experience. Prior highway work experience and training in the use and maintenance of equipment and traffic‑control experience is required.

Must have a strong customer service focus, a keen eye for detail, the ability to work well and perform within a team that is required to travel and work away from home through the work week and be well versed in Department and Industry Occupational Health & Safety rules and regulations. The incumbent must be able to work on a busy highway with the travelling public nearby.

A valid Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement is required.

Training in Transportation of Dangerous Goods and Working in Confined Spaces, along with WHMIS, First Aid and CPR certification are assets. Previous experience as an Operator/Painter will also be considered an asset.

This position requires an individual with good physical dexterity due to the lifting, carrying and continuous movement required. This position also requires working within a confined space on the highway and the ability to multitask and maintain concentration while operating specialized line‑painting equipment is required to ensure safe work practices are followed.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Equivalencies may include but are not limited to:

  • At least 3 years of related experience.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

The geographic differences and varying climates across the province may determine the nature and methods of the work performed. Work is performed outdoors with continuing exposure to weather, noise and road traffic.
