Description Of JobThe Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities throughout the state. Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility.
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required).
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles.
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms.
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule.
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles.
- Monitor visiting areas; conduct counts; maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches).
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards; inspect inmate mail and property.
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) and follow safety protocols.
- Attend roll call; document incidents; communicate information to coworkers and supervisors.
- Follow established tool and key control, ensure proper storage and documentation.
- Work flexible hours, including shifts to maintain facility security (24/7).
Positions require working additional hours as needed.

High School Diploma or GED.
Conditions of Employment

- Legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses E-Verify; sponsorship is not provided for non-residents.
- Must be at least 18 years old; possess a valid/unrestricted Colorado driver’s license.
- Disclosures for prior state employment, background checks, and health screening requirements apply.
- Successful completion of a background investigation and health screening; ability to perform essential functions.
- Complete Basic Training modules including Defensive Tactics and related assessments.
- Willingness to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays; ability to travel and transport inmates as needed; TB screening required.
Required Competencies
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability.
- Sound judgment and decision-making; teamwork and customer service.
- English reading, writing and verbal communication; ability to observe and monitor activity.
- Knowledge of criminal justice concepts (ADAs, PREA, ARs) and ability to use computers.
- Ability to learn and apply correctional methods for inmate reentry; effective communication with inmates, families and the public.
- Ability to perform searches and operate security equipment; ability to respond to emergencies and use physical force when trained.
- Willingness to work in a locked facility under variable conditions; maintain alertness and resilience; tolerance to stress.
Preferred Qualification
Bilingual; mentoring or volunteer experience.
The assessment process includes MQ review, Comparative Analysis, and potentially suitability screenings, oral/written assessments, or other arrangements. Ensure the Work Experience section fully addresses qualifications and accomplishments. Provide at least ten years of relevant experience for background processing, where applicable.
