Overview
This Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) posting will be used to fill vacant positions at our Delta location. There are opportunities with the CDOC. This posting is for the Correctional Officer I (CO I) position and supports the CDOC mission, vision and values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required)
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles
- Monitor visiting areas
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts
- Cross check and maintain movement logs
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches)
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards
- Inspect inmate mail and property
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires, escapes) using established safety protocols
- Follow tool and key control protocols, ensure proper storage and documentation
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors
Positions may require working additional hours and/or shifts to maintain 24/7 operations.
Minimum QualificationHigh School Diploma or a GED certificate.

- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify. CDOC does not sponsor non-residents of the United States.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid, unrestricted driver’s license
- Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose information and provide explanations; except under extraordinary circumstances, prior termination or resignation may disqualify from future State employment
- Have no felony convictions; not eligible to hire if engaging in sexual activity with offenders or certain related offenses as defined by policy
- Successful completion of a background investigation is required; applicant must provide official dispositions for criminal charges
- All offers are contingent on successful health screening and the ability to perform essential functions
- Successfully complete all modules of the CDOC Basic Training, including English reading comprehension and defensive tactics examinations
- Possess the physical ability to complete Defensive Tactics and related training
- Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and on assignment
- Must be willing to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays; shift schedule is provided after Basic Training
- Willing and able to use physical force (as trained) including firearm use and to respond to emergencies
- Willing and able to work in a locked facility with varying conditions and outdoors in inclement weather
- Willing and able to travel and/or transport inmates in a state vehicle
- TB screening is required for all new employees

- Ability to read, comprehend and communicate in English (spoken and written)
- Ability to observe and respond to security concerns; effective communication with staff and inmates

- Proficiency with basic computer skills and email
- Ability to document and recount events clearly and accurately
- Ability to learn and apply correctional methods for community reentry
- Respectful communication with inmate families and the public
- Ability to supervise inmates and conduct searches (canine, metal detector, area, etc.)
- Ability to operate and monitor security equipment and navigate emergencies
