Fire Department | Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.38 per hour; once cleared as a Volusia County Paramedic, an additional $3.77 will be added to the base pay.

Definition

This job/class works under general supervision primarily being a Lieutenant. The purpose of this position is to protect life and property from all hazards within the department skill sets. Employees in this classification perform mainly EMS skills with limited fire/rescue duties as assigned and qualified for, along with performing any other related work as directed. They are responsible for following the Department's policies and procedures, and emergency plans and operations.

Once they become qualified as a Firefighter, their job description automatically upgrades to Firefighter.

Essential Functions (Not All-inclusive)
  • Obtains and maintains thorough knowledge of specific laws, plans, policies and procedures, and codes pertaining to the Fire Department and the assigned organizational subunit.
  • Follows the directions of the chain of command and written policies during operations of the organizational subunit in the event of natural or man‑made disasters.
  • Responds to situations while following orders to provide staffing to operate fire or EMS equipment, within City boundaries or beyond.
  • Aids in the mitigation of both emergency and non‑emergency incidents as directed by supervisor or policy. Expectation to serve overtime during times of vacancy or extraordinary events.
  • Maintains current knowledge and practical application with EMS tasks by attending professional and technical seminars, training classes, and conferences; may require off‑shift commitment.
  • Conducts station tours, provides public information, and strives to set a professional standard within the community.
  • Proactively manages and exercises control over rumors and negativity within the workplace, fostering a positive and constructive work environment.
  • Performs or manages work area and station cleaning; supervises maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment. Performs other duties as required.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Attends the Firefighter Minimum Standards Course at an approved FL Certified Training Center within six months of hire; extensions may be granted pending school start dates.
  • Successfully completes the Firefighter Minimum Standards Course and receives a State of Florida Certificate of Compliance within one year of hire.
  • Maintains a minimum three‑year employment commitment upon graduation from fire school; failure to comply will trigger CBA debt‑repayment language. This is not a guarantee of employment.
  • Responds to emergencies with a transport unit, handling Advanced or Basic Life Support medical emergencies as part of the transport company.
  • Performs qualified EMS skills for patients when assigned, or assists other qualified personnel.
  • Removes persons from danger, recognizes acute symptoms requiring immediate care, and assists in administering life‑saving medical and rescue procedures.
  • Achieves Lead Paramedic status and functions in that capacity within one year of hire, or a realistic period if not actively in fire school.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current Florida State Driver's License.
  • Current Florida State Paramedic certification.
  • Lead Deltona Paramedic within one year from hire.
  • Current Basic Life Support CPR Certification (AHA preferred).
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification (AHA preferred).
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification (AHA preferred).
  • Current International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) or Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification within one year of hire.
  • EVOC or CEVO 16‑hour Emergency Driving Certification (if class available).
