Job Summary
The Inspectorate Division (INS) implements all the Technical Secretariat’s on-site verification activities, ensuring the efficient and effective deployment of inspection teams to both military and commercial facilities around the world, as required by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). INS maintains preparedness to respond to and investigate allegations of use of toxic chemicals as weapons and readiness to conduct Challenge Inspections (CI) and Investigations of Alleged Use (IAU) upon request from Member States in the event of a chemical incident.
The expected start date: 17 August 2026.
General Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate the core values of the OPCW in the execution of your duties;
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Manual of Confidentiality Procedure (MCP);
- Act with due regard to health and safety (H&S) by taking all reasonable steps to prevent, reduce and eliminate harm, injury or illness in the work environment;
- Conduct all phases of the mission (preparation, inspection, and post-inspection activities) in an effective, efficient, and consistent manner, by applying relevant INS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and verification guidelines;
- Operate and use protective, detection and decontamination equipment as per current OPCW procedures;
- Assist the Inspection Team Leaders (ITLs) and Head(s) of Unit(s) in achieving Inspection Team Personnel (ITP) responsibilities and objectives;
- Maintain and develop professional competence: complete required training and ensure that relevant knowledge and expertise is current, at headquarters or in other locations around the world;
- Support Knowledge Management activities;
- Contribute to identify and promote advances in science/technology that are relevant to the Division, plan and implement technical activities related to developments in science and technology and actively support the Secretariat’s anticipated activities at the Chem Tech Centre (CCT);
- Undergo any special duties and tasks as directed by the Inspectorate Management Team.
Specific Responsibilities:
Analytical Chemist (AC)
- Assume the role of Sub-team Leader during Article VI inspections when Sampling & Analysis (S&A) activities are planned;
- Prepare a sampling plan and conduct S&A activities when applicable;
- Review analysis results and report/advise accordingly;
- Perform area reconnaissance and use all equipment associated with such activity;
- Support the assistance and protection against Chemical Weapons (CW);
- Support and participate in CI, IAU, as well as in other OPCW Non‑Routine Missions (NRMs);
- Provide support in missions where evidence of possible CW-related incidents needs to be gathered, with a focus on forensic sound exploitability;
- Support internal capacity building efforts of the organisation to improve knowledge and skills of deployed personnel in evidence gathering, crime scene investigations as well as report writing and other investigative techniques and procedures.
Chemical Production Technologist (CPT)
- Perform chemical engineering evaluations and mass balance calculations; review of documents; help developing sampling plans;
- Participate in the evaluation of the technological basis of the declared CW, including both the chemical warfare agent (CWA) and the munition parts;
- Monitor and verify the destruction of the CWs in Chemical Weapons Destruction Facilities (CWDFs);
- On voluntary basis, participate in NRMs.
