What will be your role?
As part of the Personal Protection and Explosives Safety (PPES) department, you will be responsible for the preparation, execution, and reporting of ballistic experiments in our Laboratory for Ballistic Research (L ). The L has access to large‑caliber weapons, small‑caliber weapons, and vehicle testing facilities. You will work in a team of specialists and may develop into an all‑round range officer.
You will contribute to projects researching protective materials such as bulletproof vests, helmets, vehicles, and concrete structures against ballistic impact and explosive pressure. You will also test protective equipment used by governments, among others. The work follows international (NATO) standards and the ISO 17025 quality standard and is project‑based.
You will prepare and carry out measurements and handle research weapons and ammunition safely. During experiments, you will troubleshoot problems with your colleagues and, when necessary, consult the TNO project leader or client. You will ensure that research results are delivered to our clients and that reporting is completed, independently or collaboratively.
What we expect from youWe look for a practical-minded colleague who enjoys team work on ballistic experiments. You must work accurately and meticulously, both in preparation and execution, and later in reporting. You should be methodical, able to solve malfunctions, and proactively improve the testing process and operational efficiency.
An affinity for ballistics, whether through a prior role involving it or through relevant responsibilities, would be a strong advantage and signals interest in the field and safety procedures.
What you also bring- A completed vocational (MBO level
4) education in a technical field such as mechatronics, civil engineering, physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar. - Experience in a technical, hands‑on role (not an office job). Experience in defense, machine building, offshore, or automotive sectors is welcome.
- Dutch language skills at B2 level (spoken and written) and English at B1 level (spoken and written).
- An interest in the core tasks of the Ministry of Defence.
- Commitment to safety, quality, efficiency, and confidentiality.
- Completion of the internal TNO training to become a range officer, including an internal exam.
- A category B driving licence; a forklift certificate is preferred. If you do not yet have one, you can obtain it through TNO. A first aid (EHBO) certificate is also desirable.
