About this position
This internship focuses on design flat lens antennas for integrated antennas on package with direct impact:
Today’s data‑transfer technologies are reaching their limits. To keep up with the massive amount of data we move every day, future systems need to increase dramatically their data rates. One promising solution is to use short-range wireless communication at extremely high frequencies, from 200 to 300GHz, which can enable ultra‑fast links. You will work with our team on flat lens antenna solution to increase the gain of integrated antennas on package and contribute to solutions that help advance in very high data rate transfer technology.
You will be part of an environment where curiosity is encouraged, ideas are welcomed, and you have the space to develop your expertise.
During this internship, you will work on 200 – 300 GHz flat lens antenna solution based on transmittarray, using electromagnetic high frequency techniques and simulation software to explore and address how to realize high-gain planar antenna systems suitable for advancing packaging technologies. You will go through different phases of the project, such as literature review, implementation of dedicated design tools based on Geometrical and Physical Optics (GO-PO) methods, and verification via electromagnetic software simulations (e.g. Ansys HFSS or CST studio suite) and translate your findings into a Quasi-Optical (QO) system complete design for antenna on package.
Along the way, you will further develop knowledge on high frequency design techniques, gain knowledge advance applied electromagnetism and antenna design, and have the opportunity to contribute your own ideas within the antenna team of the radar technology department in the framework of a project between TNO and NXP.
For this internship, we are looking for a student in the final stage of her/his M.Sc. degree with a background in electronic engineering or a similar degree, who has an interest in the field of applied electromagnetism and antennas. You have basic skills in Matlab and/or Python, Ansys HFSS and/or CST studio suite or the motivation to quickly develop them. It helps if you bring good communication skills, result driven attitude, and focused in problem solving, but we are happy to support you in developing areas you want to learn more about.
What matters most is that you are curious, proactive, and enjoy working together on making things work. The duration of the internship nine months. You will, of course, be properly supervised during your work placement and be given the scope for you to get the best out of yourself. Naturally, we provide suitable work placement compensation.
An internship at TNO means working in an environment where substance and impact are central. You will become part of a knowledge organisation where research and practice come together, and where experts collaborate on solutions to current societal and technological challenges. Your internship is a period in which you can discover what suits you, where your strengths lie and what you would like to learn next.
You are part of a professional working environment, gain insight into how things work in practice, and have the opportunity to build experience that goes beyond this internship alone. For many students, an internship is therefore also a first step in discovering whether TNO could be a potential next step after graduation.
In addition, we offer you:
- A professional and innovative internship environment in which you actively contribute to societal and technological challenges, working alongside leading experts in your field.
- Personal and dedicated supervision, with focus on your learning objectives, development and study assignment.
- Room to develop: you gain relevant work experience, develop both your subject‑specific and professional skills, and build a valuable network.
- Use of a laptop and the facilities you need to perform your work effectively.
- A monthly internship allowance of €615 for a full-time internship, for MSc, BSc and vocational education (MBO) students.
- Up to eight hours of leave…
