Head of Analytical Laboratories / Senior MC‑ICP‑MS Specialist in Isotope Geochemistry
NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the National Oceanographic Institution of the Netherlands.
We are looking for a Head of the Analytical Laboratories / Specialist in Isotope Geochemistry. This leadership role requires a hands‑on scientist with experience in analyses of metal/inorganic stable isotopes and their application in marine sciences. The candidate should possess proven expertise in the operation and method development of MC‑ICP‑MS, combining laboratory leadership with a strong technical component as the primary operator of our MC‑ICP‑MS (Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus).
Lab equipment: state‑of‑the‑art clean lab facilities, laser ablation system, SF‑ICP‑MS, Q‑ICP‑MS, and MC‑ICP‑MS (Neptune Plus). Potential research lines include reconstruction of past pCO2 levels using B‑isotopes, paleo‑redox conditions using Mo and U isotopes, biomineralisation using Mg isotopes, sediment dating using U/Th, sea‑water nutrient cycling using Fe and Zn isotopes.
Responsibilities- Daily operations of the OCS laboratories.
- Primary operator and technical lead for the MC‑ICP‑MS.
- Method development, instrument maintenance, user support, and data quality assurance.
- Development of new techniques and contribution to research.
- Liaison between scientists and laboratory operations.
- Set up own research line with a marine isotope geochemistry focus.
- Lead a team of seven research technicians.
- PhD in chemistry, earth sciences, biology or a related field.
- Hands‑on experience operating and maintaining MC‑ICP‑MS instruments (preferably Thermo Neptune Plus). Including method development, troubleshooting, and data quality control.
- Experience or interest in a broad range of ocean science topics.
- Strong organisational skills and flexibility for dynamic projects.

- Full‑time position with duration of 1 year with prospects of a permanent position.
- Salary compliant with CAO‑WVOI scale 11 or 12, depending on experience.
- Annualised holiday hours: 338 for a 40‑hour week.
