Department Summary
The Chemistry Department is known as a leader in research faculty and graduate students successfully compete for research funds from both public and private sources (see below), publish their groundbreaking research in top scientific journals, and are frequently highlighted and interviewed in the media.
Although our research groups are rooted in the traditional subdisciplines of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, much of our current research is interdisciplinary and spans the boundaries of two or more of these areas. For example, we have strong faculty groups working at the frontiers of computational chemistry, materials chemistry, and catalysis. We are building a new strength in chemical biology, which uses the tools of chemistry to study biological systems.
Finally, we are revitalizing our program in chemistry education research.
