What We’re Looking For- Education: A bachelor’s degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or a closely related field is required. A master’s degree in Education for Students with Hearing Impairments or a similar area is preferred but not required.
- Certification: A valid Texas Educator Certification in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) is required. Additional certifications in related areas, such as Auditory‑Verbal Therapy, are a plus but not mandatory.
- Specialized Knowledge: Familiarity with special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process are essential.
- Language Proficiency: Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required. Bilingual skills in additional languages are preferred but not mandatory.
- Additional Requirements: CPR certification is preferred.
As a Teacher of the Dead and Hard of Hearing, you will play a crucial role in empowering students who are deaf or hard of hearing to achieve academic success, foster independence, and gain equitable access to their educational environment.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Develop Individualized Plans: Collaborate with IEP teams to create and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that address the specific communication and learning needs of students with hearing impairments.
- Provide Specialized Instruction: Deliver targeted instruction in areas such as language development, auditory skills, and social‑emotional learning, utilizing strategies that align with each student’s unique needs.
- Monitor Student Progress: Collect and analyze data to track students’ academic and developmental progress, adjusting instructional approaches as needed to meet IEP goals.
- Collaborate with Teams: Work closely with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, speech and language pathologists, audiologists, and families to ensure a cohesive support system for students across all educational settings.
- Promote Accessibility: Advocate for and implement accommodations, modifications, and assistive technologies, such as FM systems, captioning, and visual aids, to ensure equitable access to learning opportunities.
- Support Transition Goals: Prepare students for life beyond school by teaching skills such as self‑advocacy, effective communication, and the use of adaptive technologies for post‑secondary education, vocational settings, and independent living.
- Foster Independence: Develop strategies to enhance students’ independence and self‑confidence in school, home, and community settings, including teaching self‑advocacy and problem‑solving skills.
- Promote Safety: Ensure students’ safety by addressing accessibility needs and teaching essential skills for navigating their environments effectively.
