The Communications Officer performs specialized radio and communications work. This high‑stress role requires focus, engagement, and high performance in traumatic, emotionally charged, and life‑threatening situations. Personnel in this position are directly responsible for deploying and monitoring the status and locations of all on‑duty Police/Fire/EMS units. The officer receives incoming non‑emergency and emergency calls, prioritizes them, and relays information to field personnel via the available communications system.

Applicants must be able to perform several tasks simultaneously while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Responsibilities
  • Operate emergency and non‑emergency communication systems; receive requests for service by telephone and relay necessary information efficiently and accurately.
  • Operate highly technical computer systems including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and enter and retrieve information from various databases such as TCIC/NCIC, Denton County computer systems, and other local, regional, and state emergency response databases.
  • Monitor state and national messages, requests, and transactions through TLETS/NLETS while ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and department policies.
  • Process, forward, and maintain records of information obtained or entered; maintain appropriate logs of services requested.
  • Operate radio console with numerous talk groups, ensuring radio operations comply with FCC procedures and requirements.
  • Dispatch, monitor, and track multiple law enforcement, fire, and EMS agencies.
  • Monitor all radio traffic while simultaneously listening for pre‑alerts to incoming calls and pre‑alerting units, placing units on scene promptly to maintain system compliance.
  • Ensure timely and accurate dispatching of units using CAD, radio, and other tools.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license within one year of appointment.
  • TCOLE approved Basic Telecommunicator course, Crisis Communications course, TDD/TTY for Telecommunicators, and a TCOLE approved Field Training Course within one year of assignment.
  • Must be 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license; must obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days.
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required.
