Job OverviewThe Juvenile Probation Officer performs professional work juveniles placed on probation or in detention by the courts. Work involves assessing juvenile probationers, meeting with probationers to ensure adherence to terms of probation, maintaining records, providing limited counseling, and referring clients to probation assistance programs. The officer confers with law enforcement and court personnel regarding violations, develops supervision and case plans, supervises juveniles in detention facilities, and transports juveniles between jails, medical institutions, schools, and placements.
Responsibilities- Maintain juvenile records, recording all contacts, filing physical and electronic records, copying files for placement, updating case plans, and conducting assessments and screenings.
- Utilize computerized data entry equipment and various word processing/file‑maintenance programs to store and retrieve information.
- Enforce court orders and maintain court‑ordered contact with juveniles under court supervision.
- Attend court hearings, gather information, and prepare and distribute court‑related documents for pre‑trial, adjudication, and detention hearings.
- Testify in court regarding probationers’ status and adherence to reporting schedules and other terms of probation.
- Conduct office visits and field visits with juveniles at home, school, or elsewhere.
- Answer phone calls, phone check‑ins, and emails; prepare correspondence as necessary.
- Document all contacts with juveniles and others involved in their case.
- Refer juveniles and families to various programs available through the department and community.
- Transport juveniles to placements and visit them as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Preferred:
Minimum one year of experience in a social service, community, criminal justice, or juvenile justice agency.
- At least 21 years of age.
- No disqualifying criminal history as described in the TAC.
- Never had any type of certification revoked by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
- Complete the training required by the TAC.
- Pass the certification exam required by 344.700 of the TAC.
- Certification as a Juvenile Probation Officer by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department within six (6) months of initial employment.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to obtain a Texas driver’s license within 90 days.
- Ability to work more than 40 hours during the work week when necessary.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred but not required.
