Summary

Under limited supervision, the journeyman electrician will perform highly skilled maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting work involved with electrical systems, equipment, and/or control systems.

Duties
  • Perform electrical support, maintenance, and repair of exhibits, equipment and facilities
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on electrical and electronic equipment
  • Install temporary power systems for events
  • Study blueprints and schematics and determine methods, materials, and equipment needed to complete assignments
  • Mentor and train electrical apprentice(s)
  • Purchase and order electrical supplies and parts from vendors
  • Install lighting fixtures, power outlets, control devices, heaters, and thermostats
  • Run conduit and pull wire for new or existing electrical installations
  • Replace fuses and change lamps in florescent, mercury vapor, and incandescent lighting fixtures
  • Assist with troubleshooting, repairs and construction projects as needed
  • Coordinate with outside contractors on electrical portions of design, development and construction
  • Test installations to check and ensure continuity of the circuit, and the compatibility and safety of all components using appropriate test equipment
  • Inspect and evaluate electrical equipment to ensure that it operates efficiently and safely; determine whether equipment and new installations meet requirements of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Clean and maintain tools and perform routine maintenance on special equipment
  • Maintain clean and safe work environment
  • Utilize CMMS work order system for work scheduling, preventative maintenance programs and record keeping
  • Assist where needed in inter-departmental projects and functions
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities (as appropriate to skill level and experience) assigned
  • Have regular and punctual attendance
  • Work modified schedule as needed and determined by management
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of electricity, occupational hazards and appropriate precautions, techniques, tools and materials of the electrical trade and the City of Fort Worth Electrical Codes
  • Skilled in wiring of electrical circuits according to City code; read and use various electrical testing equipment
  • Ability to examine and diagnose faulty electrical system without immediate supervision; read and interpret wiring diagrams; follow written and oral instructions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees
  • Ability to work inside/outside working conditions; exposed to extremes of heat, cold and wetness; hazards of electrical shock; extreme heights; working from an elevated position
  • Valid driver license with acceptable motor vehicle record to maintain zoo standards of insurability
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • 2 years’ experience as a journeyman electrician in the construction or maintenance field
  • Prior experience at an AZA institution is preferred but not required

Valid journeyman electrician license

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; walk on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations in the Zoo. Work frequently involves periods of intense physical effort including, but not limited to, lifting and operating tools and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, walking significant distances, and using manual and power tools and equipment.
