The Opportunity
Denver Health, in collaboration with the University of Colorado School of Medicine, seeks an accomplished physician leader to serve as Chief of the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine (PCC). This role offers the opportunity to lead a nationally recognized academic division within one of the country’s premier safety net health systems, serving a diverse and medically complex population.
The Chief will provide comprehensive leadership for clinical, academic, operational, and strategic initiatives across pulmonary and critical care services at Denver Health Medical Center.
Position Overview
Reporting to the Chair of Medicine, the PCC Chief will oversee all pulmonary and critical care services across inpatient and outpatient settings, including the Medical Intensive Care Unit, inpatient consult services, outpatient pulmonary clinics, pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, pulmonary rehabilitation, and respiratory care services.
The Chief will be responsible for divisional strategy, quality and safety, faculty development, education, research oversight, financial performance, and regulatory compliance. The role includes close partnership with administrative leadership and a matrixed academic reporting relationship with the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Division and Academic Environment
The Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine includes 12 physicians and 6 Advanced Practice Providers and supports a robust academic mission. Denver Health serves as a key teaching site for the University of Colorado School of Medicine and provides training for pulmonary and critical care fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice learners.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership- Expand access to high quality pulmonary and critical care services for underserved populations
- Lead quality, safety, and outcomes improvement initiatives
- Establish and maintain evidence based clinical pathways and standards
- Optimize operational efficiency and patient flow
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements
- Oversee graduate medical education and fellowship training
- Mentor faculty and support professional development
- Promote scholarly activity and research excellence
- Lead continuing medical education efforts
- Serve as a visible and respected educator
- Direct clinical, financial, and operational management of the Division
- Partner with administrative leadership on planning and resource allocation
- Lead faculty recruitment, development, and succession planning
- Foster a culture of inclusion, accountability, and wellness
- Oversee quality improvement and peer review activities
- Build strong collaborative relationships across disciplines
- Communicate transparently with faculty, staff, and leadership
- Lead change initiatives aligned with institutional priorities
Candidate Qualifications
Required- MD or DO with board certification in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
- Eligibility for licensure in Colorado
- Demonstrated leadership experience in academic pulmonary and critical care medicine
- Eligibility for appointment at Associate Professor or Professor rank
- Record of excellence in clinical care, education, and scholarship
- Experience in mission driven or safety net health systems
- Strong operational, financial, and quality improvement leadership skills
