The Section of Allergy and Immunology of the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Clinical Immunologist for the evaluation and care of patients with disorders of the immune system such as inborn errors of immunity presenting with increased risk of infection and other manifestations of immune dysregulation in inpatient and outpatient settings, and to participate in the education of medical students, residents, and subspecialty fellows in accordance with the mission of the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics.

The clinical immunology team is supported by a clinical immunology laboratory at Children’s Hospital Colorado that offers state of the art services to provide the best care for our patients.

The candidate will provide oversight and care of patients with immunodeficiency and immune dysregulation at the main campus of Children’s Hospital Colorado and possibly at Network of Care locations. The candidate will participate in immunology service call coverage for the Allergy and Immunology Section.

The applicant is expected to help expand the clinical immunology programs within Children’s Hospital Colorado at the Anschutz Medical Campus and across a 7-state referral region.

The candidate will also participate in the teaching of subspecialty fellows, residents, and medical students.

Key Responsibilities:

Specific tasks to be performed include:

  • Outpatient clinical care for patients with disorders of the immune system presenting with increased risk of infection and immune dysregulation disorders manifesting with associated features of atopy, autoimmune disease, lymphoproliferation, and/or auto-inflammation: 2-4 half-day clinics per week
  • Immunology service call participation for up to 18 weeks per year including inpatient consultations, telephone consultations for outside providers, and e-consults
    “SCID” call while on immunology service call for up to 18 weeks per year to review inconclusive and abnormal newborn screening results for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and to coordinate follow up care including hospital admission for infants with SCID
  • Attendance of monthly immunology faculty meetings
  • Participation in multidisciplinary clinics that require immunology expertise such as hematology/oncology (bone marrow or cord blood transplantation), rheumatology (immune dysregulation), pulmonology (patients with interstitial lung disease), infectious disease (patients with inability to clear certain infections), cardiology (patients with congenital heart disease and immune dysregulation after thymus removal or sequelae of repair surgery), gastroenterology (patients with inflammatory bowel disease)
  • Care of patients in the infusion center receiving IgG replacement or immunomodulatory therapies
  • Development of a telemedicine program with expansion of immunology services to the 7-state referral region
  • Partnering with Genetics and the Advanced Genetics Laboratory (specialty panels, WES, and WGS available in house) to expand genetic testing as part of individualized patient care and moving towards gene therapy
  • Partnering with the bone marrow transplant service as PI or Co-PI on primary immunodeficiency consortium projects
  • Development of and participation in industry-funded clinical trials
  • Community outreach with didactic talks to community pediatricians and allergists
  • Teaching during outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations
  • Participation in teaching activities for allergy/immunology (AI) fellows in training (FITs) including bootcamp lectures in areas of expertise
  • Formal lectures in areas of expertise for FITs, AI faculty, AI advanced practice providers, and clinic nurses and staff
  • Participation as preceptor in immunology board review presentations led by FIT
