Position SummaryThe Family Literacy Program at Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) invites applications for part-time affiliate faculty teaching positions. We are seeking a part-time Lead ESL instructor to prepare and deliver lessons to adults (up to 19 hours per week). Lead instructors should be enthusiastic, flexible, attend professional development workshops and departmental meetings. The position is semester-based, including classroom instruction and planning time.

- Provide direct classroom instruction for adults using appropriate ESL curriculum, methods, and materials.
- Teach classes at off-site locations in the greater metro area.
- Create a supportive learning environment by responding to instructional needs and concerns.
- Employ student-centric methodologies and multiple teaching styles.
- Demonstrate curriculum methods and materials to volunteers or teaching aides as needed.
- Collaborate with Family Literacy staff in planning parent enrichment and intergenerational activities.
- Represent the University positively to community partners and at off-site teaching locations.
- Pack up and move classroom spaces as required.
- Assist with registration, orientation, technology sessions, and administering assessments.
- Attend workshops, trainings, and in-services as requested.
- Maintain records and reporting responsibilities.
- Work closely with other staff regarding curriculum, student goals, testing, and evaluation.
- Engage in outreach to support student retention.
- Inform students of policies and uphold school standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Affiliate faculty duties include teaching classes (in person or online), preparing materials, grading, providing feedback, addressing student questions, supporting students academically, maintaining office hours, and complying with university policies on instruction evaluation and peer observation.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in education or a related field; if not in a related field, a TESOL certificate (e.g., CELTA) is required.
- Current CDE Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABEA) or certification within two years (current ABEA preferred).
- Minimum of two to three years' experience with adult learners.
- Knowledge of current ESL and adult education theories.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Proficiency in creating presentations.
- Ability to work under pressure and maintain quality standards.
- Ability to lift/carry 20 lbs.
- Master's degree in ESL or a related field.
- Fluency in another language (Spanish preferred) or intermediate language skills with long-term language study experience.
- Experience with assessment tools like CASAS and Best Plus.
- Experience working with immigrant, low-income, marginalized, and diverse urban populations.
Part-time, at-will employment on a per contact-hour basis, usually semester-to-semester. Not eligible for university benefits. Teaching assignments depend on budget and enrollment. Candidates will be expected to teach in person at off-site locations in the metro area.
Salary$25 - $30 per hour.
