Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Electrical Engineer – Power Systems to lead engineering efforts for sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and complex power distribution networks. Based in Denver, CO, this is a senior-level role offering high visibility, technical leadership, and project ownership — without direct reports.
You’ll serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and lead engineer on critical infrastructure projects, including military base systems, microgrids, and municipal distribution networks. Ideal for a well-rounded engineer ready to move beyond narrowly defined roles into comprehensive design, modeling, and project execution.
Key Responsibilities- Lead end-to-end engineering design for power distribution and substation systems.
- Develop concept-level and detailed design packages for traditional and renewable microgrid systems.
- Perform and validate power system modeling, load flow, and protection studies using tools such as ETAP, SKM, or Easy Power.
- Analyze power quality, electrical fault events, and system loads; recommend corrective measures.
- Prepare and review engineering reports, technical drawings, material specifications, and project estimates.
- Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, client specifications, and internal engineering standards.
- Serve as a key client liaison; maintain long-term relationships across military and municipal sectors.
- Support field activities including site walkdowns, construction support, and commissioning oversight.
- Mentor junior engineers and review their technical work and deliverables.
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) with emphasis in power systems (required).
- PE License (required).
- 12+ years of experience in the electric utility or power systems industry.
- Minimum 5 years in a lead, supervisory, or project management role.
- Broad experience in medium-voltage distribution and substation systems.
- High proficiency with ETAP, SKM, Easy Power, or equivalent modeling tools.
- Familiarity with MS Project or similar for scheduling and cost estimation.
- Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to multitask, manage priorities, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Must be a U.S. citizen (due to military base project requirements).
- Must hold a valid U.S. driver’s license.
- Must be able to obtain Military Base Security Access Clearance.
- Projects are primarily on U.S. military bases — think of them as self-contained cities requiring full-scale power systems design and support.
- Engineers are involved in full lifecycle engineering: from initial concepts to field implementation.
- Additional work includes municipal and microgrid projects with renewable and traditional generation.
