Position: Engineer-In-Training I (Bridge Design) - Denver

Description of Job About the Position

This position supports structural engineering analysis and design for highway structures, working under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. Responsibilities include assisting with structural calculations, design details, code application, and preparation of plans, reports, and cost estimates. This role provides hands‑on experience across multiple phases of structural engineering projects.

Your duties and responsibilities while working with a licensed engineer Design/Detailing/Analysis
  • Analyze, design and detail routine bridge and highway structure elements.
  • Learn to perform engineering calculations to ensure adequate structural strength and stability for signs, signals, and bridges utilizing examples, structure specifications, and computer software.
  • Assist engineers in evaluating and reporting the condition and capacity of existing structures for overloads, rehabilitation, or remedial action.
QC/QA/Rating
  • Review routine structural designs performed by others for compliance with the AASHTO bridge specifications and the Staff Bridge Design, Rating and Detailing Manuals.
  • Provide load capacity rating for new and existing bridges.
Communication
  • Attend project meetings and, through training and experience, learn how to provide structural expertise at these meetings.
  • Collect limited structural design data and rating information from other parties.
Training
  • Read industry publications and attend training, seminars, and presentations to learn about structural engineering related products, materials, practices, software, and research.
  • Accomplish on‑job training and independent self‑study in structural analysis and design.
  • Become acquainted with the Department's structural standards, specifications, and the AASHTO specifications.
Structure Asset Management
  • Become acquainted with the Department's structural inspection program, structure asset management program, and the structure data available from these programs.
  • Retrieve and report information needed from these programs by supervisor and other unit members.
Field Engineering
  • Accompany other engineers on field inspections to gather needed information and gain an understanding of the existing site conditions and structural behavior.
Construction
  • Assist engineers on field trips to help construction and maintenance personnel resolve construction problems.
  • Participate in redesigning portions of the proposed structure as needed to resolve field problems.
  • Learn to check contractor shop drawings for compliance with the bid documents.
Standards & Specifications
  • Assist other engineers in developing new structural engineering standards and specifications by preparing calculations, writing, and detailing documents.
Work Environment
  • Primarily 8:00 am–5:00 pm work hours, Monday‑Friday.
  • Daytime travel during business hours.
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs of force occasionally, up to 20 lbs frequently, or up to 10 lbs regularly to move objects.
  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather.
  • Exposure to non‑weather‑related hot and cold temperatures.
  • Contact with water or other liquids; exposure to non‑weather‑related humid conditions.
  • Exposure to shaking objects or surfaces.
  • Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation that affect the respiratory system, eyes, or skin.
  • Proximity to moving, mechanical parts.
  • May work in high places.
  • Driving for meetings, travel, inspections, training, and related tasks.
  • Primary time spent in office and occasional time spent visiting projects.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, preferably civil engineering. Graduates of May 2026 or earlier are eligible.
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer‑Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors substitutes for the required degree.
  • Submission of a legible copy of official or unofficial college transcript(s) or a U.S. foreign credential evaluation report (for non‑U.S. institutions). Transcripts must show the school name, completed credit hours, and that a…
