Position SummaryThis position supports structural engineering analysis and design for highway structures under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. Responsibilities include assisting with structural calculations, design details, code application, and preparation of plans, reports, and cost estimates. The role provides hands‑on experience across multiple phases of structural engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities- Analyze, design and detail routine bridge and highway structure elements.
- Learn how to perform engineering calculations to ensure adequate structural strength and stability for signs, signals, and bridges utilizing examples, structure specifications, and computer software.
- Assist engineers in evaluating and reporting the condition and capacity of existing structures for overloads, rehabilitation, or remedial action.
- Review routine structural designs performed by others for compliance with the AASHTO bridge specifications and the Staff Bridge Design, Rating, and Detailing Manuals.
- Provide load capacity rating for new and existing bridges.
- Attend project meetings and learn how to provide structural expertise at these meetings.
- Collect limited structural design data from other parties.
- Read industry publications and attend training, seminars, and presentations to learn about structural engineering related products, materials, practices, software, and research.
- Accomplish on‑the‑job training and independent self‑study in structural analysis and design.
- Begin to become acquainted with the Department's structural standards, specifications, and AASHTO specifications.
- Acquire knowledge of the Department's structural inspection program, structure asset management program, and the structure data available from these programs.
- Retrieve and report on information needed from these programs as assigned.
- Accompany other engineers on field inspections to gather needed information and gain an understanding of the existing site conditions and structural behavior.
- Assist in providing construction assistance on field trips and help construction and maintenance personnel resolve construction problems.
- Participate in redesigning portions of the proposed structure as needed to resolve field problems.
- Check contractor shop drawings for compliance with the bid documents.
- Assist other engineers in developing new structural engineering standards and specifications by contributing calculations, writing, and detailing.
- Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday‑Friday.
- Daytime travel during business hours.
- May exert up to 50 lb. of force occasionally, up to 20 lb. frequently, and up to 10 lb. regularly to move objects.
- Exposure to various weather conditions (hot, cold, wet, humid, windy) and non‑weather circumstances (heat, cold, humidity).
- Contact with water or other liquids and exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
- Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
- May work in high areas.
- Driving for meetings, travel, inspections, training, and other duties.
- Primary time spent in office with occasional project visits.
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, preferably civil engineering. May accept applications from May 2026 graduates.
- Current enrollment as an Engineer‑Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the required degree.
- Legible copy of official or unofficial college transcript(s) or an official foreign credential evaluation report, if education is used to qualify. Transcripts must show the name of the school, completed credit hours, and (if applicable) that a degree was conferred. Foreign transcripts must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency by a NACES service and the evaluation report must be official.
