The Materials Team Lead is a vital position within the Chemistry and Materials Team, responsible for ensuring efficient operations as the team continues to grow. As the Subject Matter Expert, this role involves making critical decisions, designing experiments, and independently delegating tasks to junior engineers and technicians. Key responsibilities include performing thin‑film characterizations of electro‑optic (EO) materials, interpreting data to inform further experimentation, and designing experiments to meet specific data collection needs.
The Materials Team Lead also mentors new team members, develops Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for various processes, and maintains collaborative relationships with other teams and external customers. Emphasizing safety awareness, this role ensures all team members adhere to company safety policies while driving high‑quality results efficiently.
- Independently perform thin‑film characterizations of EO material at both the neat and composite levels by utilizing advanced lab instrumentation to analyze material properties and behaviors, ensuring a comprehensive understanding and documentation of results.
- Independently interpret data from the material characterizations to inform further experimentation by analyzing results critically and developing insights that guide future experimental designs and project directions.
- Independently design and execute experiments to address specific data collection needs of the team by creating tailored experimental protocols that align with project objectives, ensuring efficient and effective data gathering.
- Mentor and train new Materials Team Engineers and Technicians by providing hands‑on guidance, sharing expertise, and fostering a supportive learning environment that enhances team capabilities and knowledge.
- Delegate tasks to junior engineers and technicians and oversee their work to ensure the team runs efficiently and produces results in a timely manner with the highest quality by setting clear expectations, monitoring progress, and providing constructive feedback.
- Devise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all processes related to the role by documenting best practices and protocols to standardize operations and ensure consistency across the team.
- Maintain a collaborative relationship with members of other teams by actively participating in cross‑functional projects, serving as a representative of the Materials Team to the larger Engineering Group, and ensuring alignment with overall company goals.
- Act as a representative of the Materials Team to current and potential customers by effectively communicating technical information, showcasing team capabilities, and addressing customer inquiries to build strong professional relationships.
- Exhibit safety awareness and ensure that all members of the Materials Team abide by the safety policies of the company by promoting a culture of safety, conducting regular safety briefings, and ensuring compliance with all regulations and practices.

- Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or a similar field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in materials engineering and at least 1 year of leadership experience for candidates with a Bachelor's degree, or 3 years of experience in materials engineering and 1 year of leadership experience for those with a Master's degree.
