Position: Engineer-In-Training I (Bridge Design) - Denver

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Position

This position supports structural engineering analysis and design for highway structures, working under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. Responsibilities include assisting with structural calculations, design details, code application, and preparation of plans, reports, and cost estimates. This role provides hands‑on experience across multiple phases of structural engineering projects.

Your duties and responsibilities while working with a licensed engineer will include, but are not limited to, the following:

Design / Detailing / Analysis
  • Analyze, design and detail routine bridge and highway structure elements.
  • Learn how to perform engineering calculations to ensure adequate structural strength and stability for signs, signals and bridges utilizing examples, structure specifications, and computer software.
  • While assisting engineers, learn how to evaluate and report the condition and capacity of existing structures for overloads, rehabilitation, or remedial action.
QC / QA / Rating
  • Review routine structural designs performed by others for compliance with the AASHTO bridge specifications and the Staff Bridge Design, Rating and Detailing Manuals.
  • Provide load capacity rating for new and existing bridges.
Communication
  • Attend project meetings and, through training and experience, learn how to provide structural expertise at these meetings.
  • Collect limited structural design data from other parties.
  • Collect design and rating information from other parties.
Training
  • Read industry publications and attend training, seminars, and presentations to learn about structural engineering related products, materials, practices, software and research.
  • Accomplish on‑job training and independent self‑study in structural analysis and design.
  • Begin to become acquainted with the Department's structural standards and specifications and the AASHTO specifications.
Structure Asset Management
  • Begin to become acquainted with the Department's structural inspection program, structure asset management program, and the structure data made available by these programs.
  • Retrieve and report on information needed from these programs by supervisor and other members of the unit. As assigned cross‑train in bridge inspections.
Field Engineering
  • Accompany other engineers on field inspections to help gather needed information and to gain an understanding of the existing site conditions, and to learn about structural behavior and deterioration.
Construction
  • Accompany other engineers on field trips to provide construction assistance and help construction and maintenance personnel resolve construction problems.
  • Participate in redesigning portions of the proposed structure as needed to resolve field problems.
