About the Division of Unclaimed Property

The Division collects and safeguards unclaimed or abandoned property in a permanent trust until it can be returned to rightful owners. The team ensures compliance with the Colorado Revised Uniform Unclaimed Property Act (RUUPA) and provides education and outreach to both the public and businesses.

Position Summary

This role strengthens holder reporting and compliance to increase deposits into the Unclaimed Property Trust Fund. The position conducts audits, provides technical assistance, and supports education efforts to ensure organizations meet statutory reporting requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct phone, desk, and virtual audits; assist the audit manager with audit activities.
  • Review reports, recommend audit candidates, and process audit documentation.
  • Deliver education and outreach, including seminars and participate in at least one outreach event annually.
  • Collaborate with holder representatives to explain audit findings and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of Colorado RUUPA and communicate statutory intent clearly.
  • Support claims processing by reviewing business claims, determining eligibility, and approving or denying claims.
  • Provide technical assistance to holders, offering training and compliance support.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience Only:
    At least six (6) years of professional experience in auditing, including conducting audits, preparing reports, and developing findings and recommendations for compliance.
  • Education and Experience:

    Combination of related education in Accounting, Auditing, Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field, certification, and/or relevant professional experience in auditing equal to 6 years.
  • Current, valid licensure as a CPA from the Colorado Board of Accountancy or current, valid CIA certificate will substitute for five (5) years of the requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • State Auditing experience in a regulatory environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Experience with Google Suite products.
  • Experience providing technical assistance.
