About the DepartmentThe Denver Sheriff Department (DSD) is the largest sheriff department in Colorado, with nearly 1,000 sworn and civilian staff. It manages two detention facilities – the Downtown Detention Center and Denver County Jail – provides security for Denver’s District and County Courts, manages transportation and extradition, operates specialized units such as Fugitive Apprehension, K‑9, the Denver Vehicle Impound Facility, and secures Denver Health Medical Center.

Position Details – Deputy SheriffDeputy Sheriffs may be assigned to either detention facility. The role requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and flexibility for reassignment. All deputies must be comfortable working with persons in custody, the public, and in high‑security or confined environments.
Training RequirementsAll successful applicants will complete a 16–18‑week Recruit Training Academy covering:
- Physical fitness and defensive tactics
- Persons in Custody management
- Firearms training and emergency driving techniques
- Report writing and legal procedures
- Scenario‑based training
- Competitive salary and up to $3,000 signing bonus (subject to agreements)

- Work a variety of shifts (nights, weekends, holidays)
- Lead, supervise, and interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds in complex situations
- Maintain custody, safety, and care of persons in custody across multiple environments
- Conduct searches for contraband, inspect for maintenance and safety hazards, and monitor behavior and health
- Transport persons in custody between facilities, courts, medical sites, and other locations
- Process intake and classification, verify legal status, document charges, and manage property
- Calculate release dates, communicate custody policies, and prepare required documentation including bonds and census reports
- Respond to and investigate incidents, preserve evidence, and provide testimony in court when needed
- Meet certification standards in firearms and tactical weapons; participate in ongoing training
- Serve in specialized or administrative roles as needed (dispatch, civil service, training, recruitment, policy development, gang intelligence unit, vehicle impound operations)
- High school diploma or GED, HiSET, or TASC Certificate
- Applicant must be 21 years of age by start of academy; valid driver’s license; meet certified physical fitness standards
- Currently employed by a law enforcement agency or separated as a peace officer within one year; at least 3 years experience
- No current internal affairs investigation in current agency
- No sustained discipline in last 3 years
- Must be able to perform essential functions
- Hiring pay for 2025 laterals determined by years of experience
$73,855 – $ (Base Salary). Target Pay: $73,855.
