Senior Employment Litigation Attorney

Join the City and County of Denver’s City Attorney’s Office as a Senior Employment Litigation Attorney, providing legal counsel to city officials, managers, and HR personnel, and representing the city in complex litigation before administrative agencies and courts.

About the Role

As a senior attorney in the Employment & Labor Law Section, you will serve as lead counsel on complex employment and labor matters, mentor junior attorneys, and collaborate with city leaders to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion.

What You’ll Do
  • Represent the City and County of Denver as the employer in federal and state courts, administrative hearings, EEOC/CCRD charges, and other forums.
  • Provide legal advice on federal, state, and city laws, rules, and other assignments.
  • Advise management on wage and hour, leave, disability accommodations, and other workplace issues.
  • Review handbooks, policies, and forms for legal compliance.
  • Conduct management training on labor relations and workplace issues.
  • Negotiate and prepare settlement agreements, ordinances, resolutions, and other documents.
  • Draft memoranda, motions, briefs, and pleadings for judicial or quasi‑judicial proceedings.
  • Assist attorneys in specialized areas with litigation, research, and related activities.
  • Prepare formal legal opinions on complex matters as assigned by the City Attorney.
  • Handle all facets of traditional labor relations, including:
    • Representing management in forming new collective bargaining units.
    • Providing legal advice on union organizing, campaigns, card checks, and neutrality agreements.
    • Handling grievance, arbitration, and unfair labor practice proceedings.
    • Negotiating or advising on collective bargaining agreements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
Leadership and Collaboration
  • Support and implement the vision of the Section and the City Attorney’s Office, integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies into work.
  • Ensure collaboration with Section leadership to achieve priorities.
  • Embrace new structures, procedures, technology, and change.
  • Promote teamwork and encourage communication among team members, leadership, and clients.
What You’ll Bring

We are looking for a skilled litigator who enjoys advisory work, thrives in a team environment, is a strong legal writer, and is passionate about public service. The right candidate is outcome‑oriented, ethical, fair, and can manage multiple lawsuits simultaneously.

Preferred Experience
  • Seven or more years of employment and/or labor law experience.
  • Substantial experience advising on Title VII, FMLA, ADA, ADEA, FLSA.
  • Experience in public sector employment.
  • Preferred traditional labor experience.
  • Preferred civil litigation experience.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
Required

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctor of Jurisprudence or Bachelor of Laws degree.
  • Three years of experience as an attorney at law.
  • No substitution of experience for education.
  • License to practice law in Colorado by hire date, or reasonable expectation to obtain by hire date, keeping licenses current.
