Job Description

The Director of Commercial & Business Banking is responsible for leading and managing the credit union’s business banking strategy, operations, and team. This role drives growth through the expansion of business lending, deposit relationships, and treasury management services while ensuring exceptional member experiences, strong credit quality, and compliance with all regulations. The position combines strategic leadership with hands‑on oversight of credit, cash management, and business development activities.

The Director is responsible for collaborating with stakeholders across the organization to advance and refine commercial and business banking solutions, as well as enhance the overall operating model.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop strategy, establish priorities, and set goals that align with organizational objectives; monitor progress through benchmarking, trend analysis, and performance reviews.
  • Lead the activities of business lending originations, relationship development, treasury/cash management services, and strategic partnerships.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to Commercial Portfolio Manager, Business relationship Managers, Commercial and Business Services Analysts, and other team members across the branch operation network and member experience center to increase market share, profitability, and member satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with fellow leaders to develop a comprehensive support framework that equips each branch with the necessary resources and training to effectively serve commercial and business members.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for business services initiatives, support senior leadership on lending, deposit programs, compliance, and growth opportunities.
  • Act as change management lead for the business unit, conducting organizational assessments and developing change road maps to ensure smooth adoption of new initiatives.
  • Provide overall leadership for large strategic projects and programs from inception through implementation.
Credit & Risk Management
  • Oversee credit and risk management for small business micro‑loans, Commercial & Industrial (C&I), and Commercial Real Estate loans.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of commercial lending practices and credit analysis, including the review of business/personal tax returns, financial statements, and related documentation.
  • Identify and resolve operational, credit, and performance gaps; implement changes and improvements to mitigate financial risk.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations, including Bank Secrecy Act/Anti‑Money Laundering requirements and Information Security policies.
Member Experience & Business Development
  • Develop strategies to position the credit union as the financial institution of choice for small and mid‑sized business members.
  • Drive growth by generating new business members, deepening existing relationships, and expanding product penetration.
  • Manage the branch referral pipeline, qualifying opportunities and coordinating with internal partners to deliver tailored solutions.
  • Provide consultation and resolution for complex member issues related to loans, deposits, and treasury management services.
  • Ensure high levels of member service quality, responsiveness, and professionalism consistent with the credit union’s values.
Operations & Team Management
  • Direct day-to-day operations of the business banking team, ensuring appropriate staffing, resource allocation, and service levels.
  • Oversee hiring, training, performance management, succession planning, scheduling, and staff development.
  • Evaluate training programs for effectiveness and ensure team members are well equipped to meet goals.
  • Maintain accurate records, account file maintenance, and periodic audits of business/commercial accounts.
  • Prepare reports and deliver presentations to senior management on performance, opportunities, and risks.
  • Ensure department policies and procedures remain aligned with industry trends, market needs, and organizational goals.
