Position Details

Responsibilities
  • Assist with monitoring of state natural areas, collecting biological data, identifying flora and fauna, evaluating natural community health.
  • Create and update GIS maps of state natural areas.
  • Assist staff with coordination and planning for monitoring visits.
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative monitoring of rare plants, including threatened and endangered species.
  • Write technical field reports and disseminate information to landowners and partners.
  • Assist with management of the volunteer steward program, processing volunteer field reports, and writing newsletters.
  • Participate in program outreach, quarterly Colorado Natural Areas Council meetings, and other tasks as needed.
Basic Requirements
  • Current & valid driver’s license required for operating a state vehicle.
  • Willing and able to work 40 hours per week.
  • Available for varied shifts and travel statewide for multiple consecutive days, generally 50% of time during field season (May–September).
  • Capable of working outdoors under variable weather, hiking rough terrain, and camping for multiple nights in remote areas.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google App Suite.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ideal Candidate
  • Knowledge of Colorado’s flora, fauna, and ecological systems.
  • Proficiency in identifying Colorado’s natural features using dichotomous keys.
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, ecology, botany, rangeland science, or related field; or at least three years of comparable work experience.
  • Experience with backcountry travel, navigation, and driving 4WD vehicles across rough terrain.
  • Experience conducting biological field-based monitoring.
  • Proficient in ESRI GIS applications (Arc Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps).
  • Strong scientific and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with limited supervision and within a team.
  • Excellent organization, time‑management, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with volunteers, landowners, and conservation partners.
Compliance & Additional Requirements

Pursuant to the DNR-120 Fleet and Driving Standards Administrative Directive, vehicle drivers must maintain a safe driving record and a valid driver license. Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs) will be reviewed for workers assigned or required to operate a state fleet vehicle.
