Volunteers of America Colorado invites applications for a part‑time Shelter Coordinator in the Denver Metro Area. The role involves rotating 30‑minute break coverage for shelter staff, managing facility operations, supporting participants, and maintaining program safety and cleanliness.
Responsibilities- Provide rotating 30‑minute break time coverage for shelter program staff.
- Assume responsibility for managing the facility during coverage periods.
- Support and coordinate with other staff in delivering housing stability and support services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness.
- Ensure participants’ needs are met, maintain safety and wellbeing, and keep the facility clean.
- Maintain confidentiality of all information and participate effectively within and across teams.
- Manage the milieu and address any participant conflicts promptly, including contacting emergency personnel and completing required reports.
- Serve as a resource for analyzing and solving problems, staying abreast of current issues and theories within the field.
- Oversee general program facility maintenance—cooking, cleaning, supplying linen and personal items, conducting walk‑throughs, enforcing rules, checking chore completion, setting and checking alarms.
- Assist in the training and supervision of volunteers during shifts, ensuring proper tracking documentation and indemnity forms are completed.
- Maintain front desk duties: answer calls, take messages, implement participant intakes, accept donations, handle mail, issue bus passes or tickets.
- Act as a mentor to junior personnel, providing guidance on best practice standards.
- Perform all duties in accordance with the Social Work Code of Ethics.
Physical Requirements
- Single‑staffed while on duty; responsible for participants’ safety.
- Required to move quickly up and down stairs during shift for perimeter checks and emergencies.
- Occasional lifting, rarely exceeding 50 lbs.
- Permanent, part‑time position.
- When on duty, may stay at the facility for the entirety of the shift unless approved coverage is established.
- Essential staff on all scheduled shifts regardless of holidays or inclement weather.
- Must utilize the on‑call protocol if unable to fulfill a shift.

- Associate’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience in human services.
- One year of direct human service experience.
- Good organizational and planning skills; works well as part of a team and independently.
- Completion of program credentialing, including criminal and civil background checks within 30 days of hire and fingerprinting.
- Willingness to obtain first aid, AED, CPR, and Narcan training.
- Valid Colorado driver’s license and state‑mandated automobile insurance.
- Possession of a personal vehicle for work‑related travel; mileage reimbursement available.
- Experience with chronic homelessness, severe and persistent mental health concerns, case management, shelter experience, or milieu management.
- Crisis intervention skills.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication.
- Competency with Microsoft Office and cloud‑based applications.
- Excellent time‑management and prioritization skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team‑oriented environment.
- Strong organizational skills.
