What We Offer This is an on-call position, which means it is a part-time, hourly role. This position will work no more than 39 hours per week. The pay rate for this position is $19.80/hour and is eligible to enroll in the City and County of Denver’s 457b retirement plan. This position is not eligible for other additional benefits.# Location and Schedule In this position, you can expect to work on-site at various program locations based on business need.
Program staff work at our warehouse (4601 W. 46th, Denver) to gather gear and then head to any of Denver’s bike trails and skate parks. Staff also report to our climbing wall at the Carla Madison Recreation Center (2401
E. Colfax Ave). Programs are offered on weekdays and weekends. On‐call positions may have routine or variable work schedules.# What You’ll DoThe Department of Parks and Recreation’s Alternative Sports team is gearing up for the best winter program season yet! Our exciting and uniquely Denver programs include trail and slope style mountain biking, e-biking, BMX, and pump track. Programs also include roller skating, skateboarding, climbing, disc golf, snowboarding and maintenance of the Ruby Hill Rail Yard, and special events!
The
* Alternative Sports
* program is seeking instructors to support the continued growth of our programs. Come join the team and work where you play!
Instructors will be responsible for coaching their participants/students to achieve success in the sport assigned. Group sizes range from 8-10 participants for open enrollment programs and 10+ for school groups and special events.
Our department provides comprehensive training for all our instructional programs. Be prepared to learn more about a sport you already love and branch out to get the hang of something new! Staffing needs vary season to season, with spring, summer, and fall being the busiest time of the year for programs. Recreation Instructors are paid $19.80/hour.
As a Recreation Instructor for Alternative Sports, you will:
* Coach participants to a high degree of competency
* Be responsible for groups of 10 or more participants
* Engage with and deliver a high level of customer service to all program participants
* Display a high degree of competency and consideration for risk management including environmental factors, participant safety, basic vehicle safety and upkeep, gear inspections, co-worker safety, etc.
* Maintain a positive group atmosphere in which all participants are welcomed, included, and supported
* Maintain proper documentation such as end-of-day trip reports, incident/accident reports, and equipment logs
* Follow policies and procedures as set forth by the Department of Parks and Recreation
* Drive department vehicles, including trucks with trailer-in-tow and 15-passenger mini-buses with participants
* Respond to emergencies and provide care, when appropriate
* Perform other duties, as assigned#
What You’ll Bring Our ideal candidate is a well-rounded alternative sports enthusiast with extensive personal and/or professional experience in areas such as biking, skateboarding, rock climbing, skateboarding, roller skating, and more.
Additionally, our ideal candidate will have:
* Reliable personal transportation
* Experience leading sports programming
* Experience coaching youth and adults in an outdoor setting
* Flexible availability during our peak spring, summer and fall season
* Experience driving passenger vans, light-duty trucks, and trailers
* Bilingual skills (eligible for a stipend after assessment)
* CPR and First Aid Certification or higher
Any of the following certifications are preferred at the time of application, but not required:
* Wilderness First Aid/Wilderness First Responder Certification
* AMGA Single-Pitch Instructor or CWI
* ACCT Certified Facilitator
* PMBIA/BICP Mountain Bike Instructor
* PSIA AASI Snowboard Instructor
* Additional Relevant Certifications# Required
