Job Overview

The CNC Okuma Lathe Operator/Programmer performs machining operations and is responsible to meet the daily production requirements. This position focuses on getting the job done right the first time and promotes a safe work environment with continuous improvement and world‑class manufacturing.

Responsibilities
  • Operate machines in a safe manner.
  • Use collision avoidance features on capable machines whenever possible prior to executing programs.
  • Check tooling, setups, program coordinates, and any other information to ensure a quality part.
  • Make all corrections as needed by editing the program.
  • Make necessary notations for changes or corrections in the control.
  • Provide timely information regarding problems in production that may adversely affect quality, delivery, or customer requirements.
  • Make suggestions for further improvements in the program to shorten run times.
  • Analyze tooling, setups, and procedures and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Read and understand manufacturing drawings to classify them by part type and thickness.
  • Loading and unloading heavy weldments in machines using overhead cranes and best rigging practices.
  • Operation involves loading, unloading, and pre‑positioning of work in fixtures, and checking of parts for conformity with dimensional specifications by using fixed gauges and calipers.
  • Remain constantly alert to detect improper machining.
  • Troubleshoot material issues as they arise.
  • Work as part of a team to share ideas and improve operations, recommending, supporting, and implementing continuous improvement activities and process and procedure improvements to optimize results and improve quality of delivery, in line with quality standards.
  • Undertake continuous training and development.
  • Other duties may be assigned as the department evolves.
Skills and Attributes
  • Excellent experience in machine shop math.
  • Two‑year machining technology degree preferred.
  • CNC part and fixture setup.
  • Responsible for operation of multiple pieces and types of equipment (Okuma 4‑axis turning center & 3‑axis Lagun lathe).
  • Read and understand blueprints.
  • Clear understanding of CNC G & M codes.
  • Follow directions step‑by‑step; working knowledge of speeds, feeds, and tooling.
  • Inspect parts visually and mechanically for conformance to the print and process dimensions.
  • Able to operate overhead cranes and other lifting devices.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Good communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Sharp analytical and problem‑solving skills.

Work Environment

Consistent attendance is expected. Flexibility to respond to troubleshooting issues. The position is predominantly shop floor based, with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and odors may be present.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand at least 8+ hours per day. The employee will perform machining functions for long periods of time. Vision and use of hand dexterity for computer activities.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a regular Full‑Time benefit eligible position. Standard days and hours of work are Monday‑Friday, 2:00 pm –10:30 pm, or an approved flex schedule related to the needs of the role.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills
  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent years of experience.
  • Experience in CNC Operations, deadline‑oriented, and able to time manage with a sense of urgency.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience operating CNC lathe with Okuma control.
  • Previous experience programming with FANUC Manual Guide Eye is a plus (for Lagun Lathe).
  • Experience successfully creating programs/toolpaths with Okuma control is a must.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Degree or certificate from an accredited university or technical institution.
  • Equipment Manufacturing background.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems.
  • Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of mechanical equipment.
  • Experience leading teams of operators.
  • Pre‑Hire:
    Ability to pass a drug test as it relates to the role, background check as it relates to the role, and completion of an I‑9 form. HUBER is an E‑Verify Employer.
