Overview

We are working with a growing renewable energy and electrical engineering business that is looking to appoint a Senior Design Engineer to strengthen its in-house design capability. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, ideal for an experienced electrical design professional who enjoys leading teams, mentoring junior engineers, and delivering high-quality solar PV and electrical designs.

You will take ownership of the electrical and solar PV design function, overseeing the work of Design Engineers and Graduate Engineers, while remaining technically involved in complex designs, calculations, and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

* Lead, manage, and support a team of Design Engineers and Graduate Design Engineers, ensuring consistent technical quality and development of the team.

* Oversee and coordinate the electrical and solar PV design process from initial concept through to final issue.

* Review, check, and approve design submissions, drawings, and calculations prior to issue to clients and installation teams.

* Carry out and supervise detailed electrical design work, including:

* Cable sizing and voltage drop calculations

* Short-circuit and protection coordination calculations

* Earthing and bonding design

* Complete and review Designer Risk Assessments in line with CDM and internal procedures.

* Apply and maintain a strong understanding of Solar PV design principles, including system sizing, inverter selection, string configuration, and array layouts.

* Conduct or support site assessments and surveys to ensure designs are practical, compliant, and installable.

* Produce and review technical documentation, including design reports, specifications, calculations, and construction issue packs.

* Utilise CAD and specialist PV design software to develop and review system layouts and drawings.

* Act as a key technical point of contact for clients, internal project teams, and external stakeholders, ensuring design requirements and expectations are met.

* Support continuous improvement of design standards, processes, and technical documentation.

Skills & Experience

* Proven experience in a senior or lead electrical design role, ideally within solar PV, renewables, or building services.

* Strong technical understanding of electrical systems and solar PV installations.

* Experience reviewing and approving designs produced by others.

* Comfortable working in a leadership role while remaining hands-on technically.

* Confident communicating with clients and non-technical stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications (Essential)

* 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (2382-22)

* Electrical Design & Verification of Electrical Installations (QCF Level 4 / 2396 or equivalent)

Desirable Qualifications & Training

* Solar PV training courses and relevant CPDs

* Electrical Installations (Level 3 – 2357 / 2365)

* Inspection, Testing & Certification (2391)
