Phlebotomist

This phlebotomy post sits in the clinical team at Stapenhill Medical Centre, a GP practice with more than 9,500 patients. The work centres on obtaining consent, carrying out venepuncture, labelling and storing samples, and keeping records up to date on Systm One. It is a solo treatment-room role running fast 5-minute pre-booked clinics on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, 8am to 1pm.

A recognised phlebotomy qualification and prior healthcare experience are needed.

• Perform venepuncture safely and in line with practice protocols
• Obtain patient consent for blood sample collection
• Carry out strict identification checks and label blood tubes accurately
• Process and manage laboratory samples requested by GPs and nurses
• Package, store and send samples to the laboratory in a timely way
• Request pathology tests
• Record accurate clinical notes on Systm One after each sample
• Manage own clinic of pre-booked appointments and some urgent on-the-day slots
• Use the specimen log and resolve any discrepancies
• Know when to refer to nurses or the GP, working within own scope of practice
• Work with GPs, nurses and clinical pharmacists to support service delivery
• Contribute to audit and local improvement initiatives

• Educated to GCSE level or equivalent
• Qualified in phlebotomy

• Previous experience of work in a healthcare setting
• Experience working as part of a team supporting others

• Basic skills operating Systm One, IT systems and computers
• Able to communicate effectively and sensitively
• Personal initiative and ability to prioritise own workload

• Previous experience of working in a GP practice
