A unique opportunity awaits to join the Youth Vaping and Smoking Cessation service as a Band 5 Community Public Health Nurse within the 5-19 service. This is a development opportunity for those wishing to increase their skills and progress their career in Children’s Community Services.

Applications are welcome from registered nurses – ideally with post‑qualification experience – who are interested in developing their skills in working with children and families within a community public health and multi‑agency environment. We offer supportive mentorship arrangements, regular clinical and safeguarding supervision, and assistance with continuing professional development.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will work alongside the 5-19 service, delivering the Youth Smoking and Vaping Cessation support across a variety of education, community and health settings.
Public Health Nurses work with children and their families both in schools and at home to improve health and social outcomes and make a real difference in a true multi‑agency environment. Applicants must be confident in working autonomously as well as part of a team.
The office base for this post is currently undecided; applicants must be able to travel independently across the county.
You will be an integral member of the 5-19 team, supporting the Band 6 SCPHN alongside another Community Public Health Staff Nurse in the delivery of the Youth Smoking and Vaping Cessation service.
Your key role is to support the delivery of the youth smoking and vaping cessation service, providing evidence‑based advice to young people in a range of settings. You should be prepared to have clear knowledge and understanding of the Patient Group Directive for nicotine replacement therapy.
- Deliver school‑based smoking and vaping cessation services to children and young people.
- Work with a defined caseload of children and young people, collaborating closely with schools and multi‑agency partners to improve public health outcomes.
- Participate in a multi‑disciplinary team, including the wider local children’s workforce, working within a public health framework to meet the prioritised needs of children, young people and families.
- Support students, pre‑ and post‑registration nurses and nursing associates as required.
- Deliver face‑to‑face contacts for a defined caseload of school‑aged children, responding to client needs on a daily basis.
- Identify, assess and determine client need; where appropriate, prescribe from the nurse prescribing formulary or the British National Formulary (BNF) within your area of competence if you hold the V300 qualification, following evidence‑based practice, patient medical history and Trust policies.
- Participate in the safe management of vulnerable children and safeguarding families in accordance with the locally agreed risk assessment policy.
- Achieve equity of health outcomes for the local population through the provision of an evidence‑based and needs‑led service.
- Provide targeted interventions for children and young people who meet referral criteria with emerging needs.
- Work closely with the lead and wider 5-19 service to review, evaluate and improve services in line with local and national policy and guidelines.
- Utilise a variety of communication methods, including face‑to‑face and social media, to maximise the reach of key public health messages.
