Position: NHS 111 Clinical Advisor

Overview

The post holder will be responsible for assessing callers with a wide spectrum of clinical conditions, advising patients on next steps, and referring them to further care when appropriate. The computer‑based clinical decision system NHS Pathways facilitates and supports the advice given. NHS 111 Clinical Advisors work as part of a multidisciplinary team within DHU 111 (East Midlands) CIC, providing evidence‑based health care to meet the immediate needs of the patient.

Demonstrating a commitment to high‑quality service, clinical excellence and continuous professional development is integral to the role and to the development of the service.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Deliver safe, effective telephone triage, assessment and clinical validation for patients of all ages using NHS Pathways and clinical decision support systems.
  • Provide evidence‑based advice, promote self‑care, and direct patients to appropriate healthcare services across primary, secondary, community and emergency care settings.
  • Support Health Advisors and colleagues through clinical guidance, using advanced communication, negotiation, critical‑thinking and decision‑making skills in a high‑pressure environment.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and deliver compassionate, patient‑centred care while meeting service quality and performance standards.
  • Maintain professional registration (NMC, HCPC, GPhC or equivalent), clinical competence and ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in supervision, performance reviews, mandatory training, and service development activities.
  • Work in accordance with professional codes of conduct, organisational values and current clinical guidelines.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
  • Telephone triage – competent assessment and clinical validation of callers from all age groups and with a variety of physical and mental health symptoms.
  • Guide non‑clinical Health Advisors and other staff via the clinical advice line.
  • Use NHS Pathways or other clinical decision support systems to give high‑quality, safe advice.
  • Advise patients on self‑care and facilitate the patient pathway through primary, secondary, community and tertiary care.
  • Use negotiation skills to establish concordance with patients on the appropriate level of care.
  • Maintain accurate patient care records and manage all calls professionally, treating patients with compassion, empathy and respect.
  • Support the achievement of quality standards and performance levels relevant to the NHS 111 service.
  • Adhere to policies, protocols and guidelines, including clinical governance and quality improvement requirements.
Legal and Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with DHU Health Care CIC’s Health & Safety policy and procedures.
  • Actively recognise and report safeguarding concerns to the necessary agencies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with DHU policy, the Freedom of Information Act, Information Governance and the Data Protection Act.

Qualifications
  • Registered with the NMC adult branch, or a registered Pharmacist or Paramedic.
  • Minimum 2 years’ post‑registration clinical experience.
  • Experience working independently and within multi‑professional/multi‑agency teams.
  • Broad clinical knowledge and experience, including recent acute and/or primary care settings.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous training, learning and professional development.

Person Specification
  • Registered Nurse (Adult), Paramedic or Pharmacist with at least two years of post‑registration clinical experience.
  • Broad clinical knowledge and experience in acute, urgent, primary or community care settings.
  • Autonomous working style, able to manage competing priorities and work effectively under pressure.
  • Flexible to meet service demands, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
  • Commitment to high‑quality service, clinical excellence and continuous professional development.
