Specialist Occupational Therapist

The closing date is 20 July 2026

Newcastle Community Stroke Services is a Multi‑Disciplinary Team committed to delivering high quality community-based stroke rehabilitation for adults. We are part of a well‑established integrated stroke pathway ensuring high quality stroke care from acute admission, inpatient rehabilitation to home. We are constantly evolving our practice to provide evidence‑based therapeutic interventions and use patient and carer feedback to develop rehabilitation pathways that meet our patient's needs.

We are ready to welcome an enthusiastic, creative and dynamic new Specialist Occupational Therapist to our team.

We are a welcoming, supportive team, dedicated to improving the outcome for stroke patients and providing support for their significant others. We provide education, information and promote self‑management skills to complement the patient's individual rehabilitation journey.

Are you looking for an opportunity to further develop your stroke rehabilitation skills and knowledge, contribute to service development, enhance your leadership skills and invest in your own continuing professional development? If the answer is yes, then we would welcome your application to join our team.

Main duties of the job

You will join the team as a Stroke Specialist Occupational Therapist working closely with multi‑disciplinary colleagues to deliver client‑centred stroke rehabilitation in people's homes or other community‑based settings. It is essential you have excellent verbal and written communication skills to be an effective clinician and team player.

You will have experience of stroke rehabilitation and be competent in specialist assessment and treatment techniques such as normal movement approach, upper limb therapy and cognitive rehabilitation. You will have a robust knowledge about stroke related disability and the psycho‑social impact of this on function. You will be a flexible and creative practitioner, able to develop and carry out Occupational Therapy intervention plans to meet the rehabilitation needs for patients who present with varied and complex sequelae of stroke.

All team members take an active role in secondary prevention and healthy lifestyle advice and support for our patients.

You will be required to provide in‑reach work into the acute and stroke rehabilitation wards to promote an integrated and seamless stroke journey for patients who have experienced a sudden change in function and level of independence.

About us

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

  • Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)
  • Freeman Hospital
  • Newcastle Dental Hospital
  • Newcastle Fertility Centre
  • Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria

These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting‑edge care (supported by state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.

We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.

Job responsibilities

You will need to effectively manage your caseload autonomously and be effective in time and resource management. You will be required to drive to patients' homes and occasionally deliver small pieces of equipment.

You will be responsible for supervising and appraising rehabilitation assistants and Occupational Therapy students. You will be committed to CPD, audit and service improvement and participate in supervision, appraisal and training opportunities.
