About the role

As a University Counsellor, you will provide brief wellbeing support to university students needing assistance with mental health and wellbeing. You will work independently as part of a multidisciplinary network, delivering remote counselling via secure video platforms. The role focuses on early intervention, wellbeing support, risk assessment, and brief, short‑term therapeutic work. Sessions are typically 50 minutes in length, and during office hours you will have access to Risk and Safeguarding support and clinical guidance from the Problem Shared team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Complete session notes and outcome measures in a timely and accurate manner using the Problem Shared clinical system.
  • Always adhere to information governance and data protection requirements.
  • Recognise the limits of brief intervention work and, when necessary, escalated concerns in line with Problem Shared protocols.
  • Maintain appropriate external clinical supervision in line with your professional body requirements and participate in free reflective group practice.
Must haves
  • Full accreditation (e.g., BACP accredited, UKCP registered, BABCP, HCPC) and a minimum of 2 years post‑qualification supervised practice.
  • Ability to deliver therapy in Mandarin to meet the needs of our student population.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering brief, time‑limited wellbeing interventions to student populations.
  • Ability to assess risk and develop effective risk‑management plans.
  • Experience working with clients presenting with risk to self or others.
  • Awareness of how trauma and adverse childhood experiences can impact individuals.
  • Sound knowledge of safeguarding requirements and confidentiality in practice.
  • Excellent clinical record‑keeping skills and adherence to governance and organisational policies.
  • Ability to work independently and recognise limits of competence.
  • Confidence using digital platforms and delivering therapy remotely.
  • High‑quality written communication skills, including timely and accurate clinical reports.
Nice to haves
  • Post‑graduate training (Diploma or higher) in a recognised talking therapy modality.
  • Additional training in modalities such as CBT, CFT, IPT, DIT, or CAT.
  • Training in ADHD behavioural coaching.
  • Awareness of psychological and psychiatric models of care.
  • Understanding of research and evidence‑based practice.
  • Experience providing supervision or contributing to clinical governance.
