Main purpose of the role & responsibilities in the business
As a Lead Platform Engineer (Consultant) in Kainos, you’ll be responsible for leading teams to design, automate, build, manage and optimise modern digital service platforms. It’s a fast‑paced environment where you’ll be trusted to make sound, reasoned decisions, learning about new technologies and approaches while working with colleagues who will help you develop and grow. As the technical leader in the team, you will also interact with customers, share knowledge and mentor those around you.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Working as part of a team – You’ll work alongside colleagues in engineering, testing, consulting, product management and security capabilities to build, test and deploy software of the highest quality; including the operation and continuous improvement of underlying platform services.
- Using technology for positive impact – You’ll ensure the latest technologies are employed appropriately and aligned with industry best practices for maximum user and business benefit.
- Share your knowledge – As a respected technologist within Kainos, you’ll broadcast your opinions and be supported to share knowledge internally through communities of practice and more widely in industry.
- Becoming a Role Model – You’ll support colleagues, foster a Dev Ops culture, embody Kainos values and be someone colleagues trust for transparent decisions. You’ll be passionate and committed to ensuring Kainos projects succeed.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to clearly communicate technical design in conversation, documentation and presentation to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Proven experience of team leadership and supporting a Dev Ops culture to deliver and/or support complex projects.
- The role requires SC Clearance.
- Designing, building, testing, automating, monitoring and/or operating modern digital service platforms and improving reliability in production environments.
- Using the latest continuous delivery and automation techniques for releasing operationally ready software to production, including platform orchestration with multiple configuration management tools.
- Building and/or supporting modern digital service platforms, including architecture, design, estimation, planning and iteration on MVP using a modern agile approach.
- Championing best practice use of Site Reliability Engineering tooling, techniques and processes to manage and improve existing platform services – e.g., monitoring, platform modernisation and cost optimisation.
- Use of AWS, including SaaS or PaaS offerings, to solve business problems.
- Obtained certification with a public cloud provider (AWS).
- Obtained certification relating to a particular area of specialisation e.g. Kubernetes CKAD.
