Position: Tack & Rug Shed Assistant Volunteer (Rolleston)

Could you make a real difference for horses and ponies in need? Many horses and ponies across the UK are facing uncertain futures due to neglect, overbreeding, and financial hardship. Volunteers like you are essential to ensuring that these animals receive the care, attention, and love they deserve. Blue Cross operates two horse rehoming centres in Burford and Rolleston on Dove, and we invite you to join our amazing team of volunteers, dedicated to advocating for horses and finding them loving homes.

As a Tack & Rug Shed Assistant, you will play a key role in keeping our tack and rug shed organised, stocked, and in good condition. The proper care and maintenance of horse equipment is essential to supporting the daily welfare of our animals. By ensuring that everything is clean, safe, and ready for use, you will directly contribute to enhancing the horses' quality of life during their stay at Blue Cross.

Working alongside our horse care team, you'll help prepare tack and rugs, maintain the equipment, and keep the shed orderly. Your involvement will make it easier for our staff to care for the horses and ensure they have the best equipment to thrive.

Why we want you

As a Tack & Rug Shed Assistant, you will play a key role in ensuring that all equipment, including saddles, rugs, and other horse care items, are in top condition and ready for use. Your efforts will help maintain the smooth running of our day-to-day operations, making it easier for our staff and volunteers to care for the horses.

What you will be doing
  • Organising and maintaining the tack and rug shed, ensuring all equipment is clean, well‑organised, and in good condition
  • Cleaning and checking horse rugs, ensuring they are in good repair
  • Ensuring all tack (saddles, bridles, etc.) is properly cleaned and stored
  • Helping to prepare and check equipment needed for the horses’ daily care
  • Assisting with any other yard duties as required by the team
The skills you need
  • An interest in horse welfare and a willingness to help behind the scenes
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A good eye for detail and a methodical approach to organising equipment
  • A willingness to maintain a clean, tidy, and safe environment for our horses
  • A reasonable level of physical fitness to carry out the tasks involved
  • Previous experience in horse care or working with equipment would be beneficial but is not essential
