The Managing Editor must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
We are cultivating connections in Christ by communicating our message boldly and clearly. We do this by saturating various forms of media with the Catholic message and sharing the beauty of Catholic teachings. This position is under the direct supervision of the Director of Communications and is responsible for the management and fulfillment of the monthly Catholic magazine. Content from the publications will be shared on digital platforms including the diocesan website and social media.
The employee must have a good understanding of Catholic Church teaching and is able to complete work on deadline.
- Develop a calendar of story ideas in collaboration with diocesan staff and the Director of Communication for the print and digital publications.
- Interview people, write stories, and take photos to accompany stories.
- Work with freelance writers to make assignments, set deadlines, and proof stories as they come in.
- Ensure there is a photo, graphic, or other artwork to go with stories.
- Work with advertisers on the placement of ads.
- Get content to the designer by deadline.
- Seek feedback from proofreaders of the magazine to ensure accuracy and limit errors.
- Send approval for publication to the printer on deadline.
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or ExperienceWorking knowledge of photography, some videography knowledge is a plus, understanding of social media platforms, Microsoft and Google tools. At least 3 years of writing experience.
Knowledge of Catholic Church teaching a must.
Language SkillsAbility to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write compelling stories of people and programs. Ability to respond to questions and speak effectively to managers and employees of the organization and to the general public.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer SkillsProficient in Word, Photoshop or Lightroom. Familiarity with graphics programs like Canva. Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Google tools.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsLicensed to operate a motor vehicle and to meet agency auto insurance coverage requirements.
OtherSkills and Abilities
Proven organizational and interpersonal skills as well as experience working in collaborative team efforts. Effective planning, organising, directing and administration skills. Demonstrated ability to produce results and meet deadlines. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co‑workers, media representatives and the general public. Advanced skill in copy writing and editing news and public interest stories.
Other QualificationsExtensive knowledge of the policies and programs of the Roman Catholic Church and ability to understand, explain, and carry out the mission of the diocese and the teachings of the Catholic Church. Travel is required approximately 20 % of time to various locations throughout the diocese.

The employee also needs to travel to the locations throughout the Diocese including evenings and weekends.
