Broadway Theater Camp - EXTERNship (10-day opportunity)

Des Moines Performing Arts has an exciting short‑term opportunity for high‑school theater teachers/directors whose schools are participating in the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards program at our Broadway Intensive and Broadway Academy camps for 9 days (about 1 and a half weeks) in July 2026. Come work with Broadway professionals as they share their experiences and knowledge with middle and high‑school students.

Camp week:
July 13‑18, 2026;
Training tentatively July 8‑10, 2026

Overview
  • Pay – $17.00 per hour (plus overtime)
  • Seasonal opportunity – July 2026
  • Reports to Camp Director
  • Final date to receive applications:
    February 20, 2026
  • Four externships are available
  • Nine to ten‑day commitment
  • Must be available 40+ hours during the week of camp

Responsibilities
  • Supporting summer camp faculty in the execution of musical theater‑based performance camps for middle‑school and high‑school students
  • Collaborating with camp staff, college interns, other externs, and Broadway faculty
  • Supporting dance and music rehearsals
  • Assisting backstage during showcase performance as members of the production team
  • Assisting instructors during workshops, such as tracking student assignments, charting blocking, running music cues, etc.
  • Supervising lunches, breaks, and transition times
  • Implementing processes for health and camp safety
  • Promoting emotional support and encouragement to student participants
Qualifications
  • Ability to create a sense of teamwork and community among camp participants and serve as a role model for students
  • Passionate about working with youth and the arts
  • Experience leading theater activities, preferred
  • Experience working with middle‑school and high‑school students
  • Experience with classroom management, desired
  • Resourceful, innovative, forward‑thinking and committed
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail‑oriented, strong organizational skills, with a high level of professionalism
