Job Description
Building Teacher (Full-Time)

Bergman Academy | Des Moines, Iowa
January 2027 – End of the 2026–27 School Year

Does teaching in a small, highly engaged learning community appeal to you? Are you an enthusiastic, adaptable educator who finds joy in helping students discover, question, and grow?

Bergman Academy is seeking a creative, dependable, and intellectually curious Full-Time Building Teacher to join our school community beginning in January 2027.

This position will provide maternity leave coverage and continue through the end of the 2026–27 school year, with the potential opportunity for a full-year teaching contract for 2027–28.

At Bergman Academy, learning is personal. Our intentionally small class sizes, averaging approximately 16 students, allow teachers to build meaningful relationships, encourage curiosity, and support each student's individual growth. Our teachers work collaboratively to create engaging learning experiences in an environment where students feel known, valued, and inspired.

About the Position

The Building Teacher plays an important role in maintaining continuity, connection, and meaningful learning throughout our Preschool–8th Grade community.

This full-time educator will provide classroom coverage for absent teachers and follow established lesson plans while bringing enthusiasm, flexibility, and thoughtful classroom leadership to each day.

When classroom coverage is not needed, the Building Teacher will support students, faculty, and school programming in other meaningful ways.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate to gain experience across multiple grade levels, develop instructional skills, and become part of a supportive and collaborative school community.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Provide engaging, effective instruction across various grade levels, following established lesson plans and classroom expectations.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks, and making mistakes.
  • Maintain continuity of learning and classroom routines during teacher absences.
  • Build positive relationships with students, faculty, and families.
  • Adapt instruction and classroom management strategies to meet the developmental needs of different age groups.
  • Collaborate with teaching colleagues and school leadership to support student success.
  • Assist with classroom activities, student supervision, and school programming when substitute coverage is not needed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, initiative, and professionalism in a dynamic school environment.
  • Follow school policies, procedures, and safety protocols as outlined in the employee handbook.
Ideal Candidate

We are looking for an educator who:

  • Holds or is completing a bachelor's degree in education or a related field.
  • Holds or is eligible for an Iowa Teaching License or Iowa Substitute Teaching Authorization.
  • Enjoys working with students of varying ages and developmental stages.
  • Demonstrates creativity, patience, adaptability, and strong classroom management skills.
  • Values inquiry-based learning and student-centered instruction.
  • Communicates thoughtfully and effectively with students, colleagues, and families.
  • Brings a positive attitude, sense of humor, and genuine enthusiasm for education.
  • Is eager to learn, collaborate, and grow professionally.

December 2026 graduates are strongly encouraged to apply!
