Assoc Distribution Operator / Distribution Operator
The position is a multi-level posting that will be filled at the appropriate level based on experience and education. The following details describe the Associate Distribution Operator and Distribution Operator roles.
Responsibilities – Associate Distribution Operator- Complete the training program to become fully qualified as a distribution operator within 12 months of starting the training.
- Under direction, conduct real‑time actions that ensure safe, reliable and economic operation of the 15 kV electrical system (60‑65%) by monitoring and responding to system disturbances and restoring service to affected customers.
- Under direction, direct emergency switching on the 15 kV system and restore service as safely and quickly as possible (20‑25%).
- Operate the 15 kV distribution system in accordance with good utility practice criteria and company operating standards and guidelines (5‑10%).
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned (5‑10%).
- Provide technical input to assist in project planning (0‑5%).
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques and implement processes that prevent, detect and correct human errors.
- Conduct real‑time actions to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the 15 kV system (60%).
- Direct emergency switching and restore service as safely and quickly as possible (20%).
- Maintain proper voltage and loading; initiate actions to achieve optimum voltage levels by switching capacitors (10%).
- Operate the distribution system according to company standards and good utility practice (5%).
- Provide technical input for project planning (0‑5%).
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned (0‑5%).
- Lead associate distribution operators and implement human performance improvement techniques.
- Bachelor or technical degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience (if no bachelor degree, typically six years of related progressive work experience).
- Three years of prior work experience in this field or a related field (e.g., substation/transmission engineering, substation operations, field operations). One year of distribution experience is required.
- Knowledge of power system devices, operating characteristics, and technical skills related to energy control and switching is desired.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills; ability to articulate issues and address recipients' needs.
- Systematic problem‑analysis skills, identifying causes, anticipating implications, and effective action planning.
- Ability to coordinate construction or maintenance projects for efficiency while ensuring service reliability.
- Diplomatic conflict resolution while maintaining system integrity during outages.
- Ability to work a rotating shift.
- Effective analytical and problem‑solving skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks concurrently.
- Bachelor or technical degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience (same requirement as associate).
- Three to four years of distribution experience, or successful completion of all associate distribution operator training and demonstration of proficiency in independently operating a distribution console.
- Essential communication and analytical skills identical to the associate requirements.
- Ability to work a rotating shift.
- Effective oral and written communication, analytical and problem‑solving skills, and the ability to prioritize concurrent tasks.
