Appointed Actuary.

Purpose of the Position

The Appointed Actuary will direct the enterprise’s actuarial valuation function, ensuring the accuracy and adequacy of reserves, assumption governance, asset/liability management, and statutory surplus projections across multiple lines of business, including life, annuities, and workplace benefits. This role provides critical insight to senior leadership on actuarial methodologies, financial projections, and strategic initiatives, while maintaining compliance with state, federal, and international regulations.

In addition to core valuation responsibilities, the Appointed Actuary will drive actuarial modernization, foster talent development, and collaborate across business units to align actuarial practices with enterprise goals. They will manage a lean team of three direct reports, leverage business units for execution, and oversee a broader actuarial organization of 100+ actuarial professionals. The position requires a balance of technical expertise, regulatory leadership, and strategic vision to support financial strength, competitiveness, and long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as Appointed Actuary, directing valuation processes including reserve adequacy, assumption governance, asset/liability matching, surplus projections, and cash flow analysis across life, annuities, and workplace benefits.
  • Handle state insurance matters, filings, and other studies and research as necessary ensuring compliance with applicable state, federal, and country regulations.
  • Lead actuarial modeling and assumption-setting for valuation, financial projections, and regulatory compliance.
  • Advise senior management on actuarial assumptions and methodologies and provide input to strategic planning and product investment strategies.
  • Represent the company with regulators, rating agencies, and industry bodies; participate in advocacy and professional committees.
  • Provide strategic leadership for actuarial modernization initiatives, talent development, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure alignment with enterprise goals.
  • Develop and mentor actuarial talent, including succession planning, college recruiting, and performance management.
  • Collaborate on pricing, transactions, and M&A activities, including due diligence and integration planning.
  • Perform other job-related duties or special projects as required.
  • Apply professional standards of the American Academy and the Society of Actuaries in work activities.

Professional Experience / Qualifications
  • 15+ years of actuarial experience with deep knowledge of valuation and broad exposure to pricing, life and annuities, ALM, and risk management.
  • 10+ years or more of people leadership experience in building, managing, and/or developing high-performing teams.
  • Deep valuation experience across multiple lines of business (life, annuities, workplace benefits).
  • Appointed/deputy/assistant actuary experience preferred; qualified to sign reserve opinions.
  • Expertise in actuarial modeling and assumption-setting for valuation and projections.
  • Exposure to pricing and product development for life and annuity products preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex actuarial concepts clearly to senior leadership, boards, regulators, and external stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to lead actuarial teams and collaborate with finance, risk management, and business units to deliver strategic initiatives.
  • Strategic perspective: ability to align actuarial function with enterprise goals, balancing financial strength, competitiveness, and customer satisfaction.
