Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.
Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education.
We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.
As a Pharmacy Technician, you will beunder the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, be responsible for providing excellent service to customers by dispensing prescriptions and facilitating pharmacy assistance programs while performing additional support functions that do not require a pharmacist’s professional judgment. Coordinate with PHC team members to provide positive service experiences for patients. Demonstrate PHC iCare values in daily work.
This position requires proficiency in Spanish and English.

What You Will Do
- Enters prescription orders in pharmacy computer system in a timely manner, ensuring accuracy of all information; looks for duplicate medications and allergies. Performs ongoing data entry to maintain current and accurate databases.
- Attends to the customer promptly, performing all check-out duties at the counter. Bilingual staff interprets and translates as requested.
- Fills routine orders for prepackaged non-prescription pharmaceuticals and medical supplies. Counts, packages, and labels medications to assist pharmacists in dispensing prescriptions.
- Assists patients who are eligible for Pharmaceutical Assistance Program (PAP) and other assistance programs by interviewing the patient, coordinating completion of forms, and tracking application status with the pharmaceutical company.
- Performs quarterly clinic audits ensuring all regulatory compliance standards are met. Checks for outdated, overstocked and correct medications on site. Assists with stocking and tracking inventory for pharmacy and each clinic. Maintains order and cleanliness in the waiting room.
- Maintains knowledge of most current formulary, State of Iowa Pharmacy laws and standards and TJC standards
Qualifications You Need to Bring
Required:
- High school Degree or equivalent.
- Proficiency in basic math and algebra with ability to operate a cash register and calculate correct change.
- Basiccomputerskills with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, EMR systems and the internet.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service and professional skills with ability to apply efficiency and maintain composure in all situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively work with a diverse population.
- Reading & comprehension skills with ability to apply attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
- Willingness and ability to learn and become proficient in insurance adjudication and overrides.
