Intermediate Professional, Project Accounting
WSP in the U.S. is looking for an Intermediate Professional, Project Accounting to provide professional accounting and financial specialist support to a project team. You will review and evaluate project charges, complete cost transfers, manage project budgets, generate accurate documentation in Oracle, ensure compliance with contracts, and deliver high quality work.
Responsibilities- Work independently to manage and analyze the collection, recording, and allocation of project costs and revenue; ensuring accurate project profit and loss calculations, budget vs. actual cost, and providing financial performance and profitability to project/program management.
- Handle lifecycle project accounting from creating Oracle project accounts to tracking projects, validating invoicing, closing projects, and reconciling payables and receivables to budgets.
- Perform detailed accounting tasks related to managing project contract revenue, billing events, and billing transaction exceptions.
- Partner with the Project Manager and team to establish and update the project budget, especially when contract modifications arise.
- Generate and review project financial reports and flag items requiring escalation to the Project Manager.
- Authorize access to project accounts and transfer expenses in compliance with accounting practices and guidelines.
- Maintain quality control standards for accurate and precise project-related financial records using Oracle, spreadsheets, and software.
- Investigate project variances, submit variance reports, and analyze project resources, labor and expenses.
- Verify contract and change order characteristics, interpreting contract language, method of compensation, modifications, purchase orders, and subcontract/consultant terms.
- Ensure draft invoices from billing reflect contract requirements, obtain necessary approvals, and submit final invoices to clients.
- Manage subcontract invoicing, establish purchase orders, and follow up on subcontractor payment requests with Accounts Payable.
- Record unpaid contract billings, follow-up on delinquent accounts receivable or unbilled costs.
- Respond to client requests for details, investigate unbilled expenses, and approve all client billings.
- Attend project meetings to inform the team of current financial status and discuss actions.
- Create and submit government reports related to projects.
- Compile audit information for internal and external auditors as required.
- Stay current with project accounting principles and best practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a closely-related discipline (or proven equivalent experience).
- 1 to 3 years of post‑education experience in accounting, project contracts, and change order documents.
- Knowledge of project accounting principles, practices, and methods.
- Analytical mindset with sound independent judgement on financial decisions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for both accounting and non‑accounting audiences.
- Self‑leadership, attention to detail, accuracy, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Proficiency with office automation, accounting software, Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data manipulation), and related tools.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to analyze data and reach effective, economical solutions.
- Awareness of and adherence to WSP USA's Project Delivery Handbook.
- Track record of workplace safety and compliance with WSP's health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.
- Professional role may require extended work hours beyond a typical day.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project needs.
- Familiarity with Oracle (but not mandatory).

SalaryExpected Salary (all locations): $58,500 - $96,580.
