Compensation: $51,300 - $83,700 / year

Position Title: Detroit Early Middle College Social Studies Teacher

Funding Source: General Fund

Reports to: This position reports to and is evaluated by the School Principal

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies Education, History, Political Science, Geography, Economics, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certification with one of the following high school social studies endorsements:
    • RX – Social Studies (6–12) (preferred)
    • CC – History (6–12)
    • CJ – Geography (6–12)
    • CG – Civics/Government (6–12)
    • CN – Economics (6–12)
  • Previous teaching experience at the secondary level is strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of adolescent development, inquiry-based instruction, and effective social studies pedagogy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and instructional technology tools.
  • Commitment to building an inclusive, supportive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment and contribute meaningfully to a positive school culture.

Position

Description:

Detroit Early Middle College is seeking a passionate and dedicated High School Social Studies Teacher to join our dynamic instructional team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering civic engagement, critical thinking, and historical inquiry while preparing scholars for college‑level social science coursework. As a High School Social Studies Teacher, you will play a vital role in shaping students’ understanding of the world, their role in society, and their readiness for postsecondary opportunities.

Physical Requirements: Light Work:
Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects;
Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.

Terms of Employment: Salary & benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. The salary range for certified teachers starts at $51,300. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement engaging, inquiry‑based lesson plans aligned with Detroit Early Middle College curriculum, Michigan Social Studies Standards, and college readiness expectations.
  • Create a positive, inclusive classroom environment that promotes critical thinking, discussion, collaboration, and respect for diverse viewpoints.
  • Tailor instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students enrolled in advanced or dual‑enrollment social science pathways.
  • Regularly assess student learning through formative and summative assessments and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Provide feedback that supports student growth in content knowledge, analytical skills, research skills, and written/oral communication.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and academic needs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and Early Middle College partners to support pathway development and college readiness.
  • Participate actively in the teaching and learning cycle, including analyzing data, developing action plans, reteaching content, and reflecting on instructional practice.
  • Support and contribute to the development of student plans, including IEPs, 504 Plans, and behavior plans.
  • Stay informed about current best practices, educational trends, and developments in social studies education.
  • Establish and maintain strong professional relationships built on respect, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Adhere to all district and school policies, expectations, and protocols.
